DVR and Plex Cloud

Anyone get the DVR setup on the Plex Cloud? I’m able to get it to work on my Mac, but when I add one on the Plex Cloud I just keep getting an error.

DVR and Plex Cloud won’t work very well together. If you know how to set up port forwarding on your router and a dynamic DNS entry you may be able to hack it together for network-based tuners, but remember you’re streaming the content from your home Internet to the Amazon cloud location pre-compression so the quality will be based on how good the Internet path is.

If you want DVR you’d be much better off setting up your own server, especially if you’re not using something like an HDHR Extend with hardware compression.

Thanks. Yes, I have my HDHR Extend working with a local Plex server. So it sounds like that’s the way I should stick with. I was just hoping to remove the dependency on my Mac always being up. Perhaps a Mac Mini dedicated for this purpose is in my future.

I’m “lucky” in that I have enough things I want on all the time that I can just build them all into one server with Virtual Machines. You can also look into posts around running DVR on a Raspberry Pi, or some of the NAS solutions - both may be lower power and you can push the content to your cloud storage for use with your cloud DVR after the fact.

Another option that may be worth considering outside of Plex is the YouTube offering around network TV content. It’s too pricey for my modest watching habits, but does mean you don’t care about the HDHR or local server.
