So I was recorded a episode of a show to add to my Plex library. The file got saved to:
SciFi Is Cool (2015)
Since there is no other show named “SciFi Is Cool”, the year is unnecessary and is not used by any of the download agents. So now it creates a situation where I have two folders:
SciFi Is Cool
SciFi Is Cool (2015)
While Plex doesn’t have a problem with this, my download agent will not realize that the file is downloaded and will go out and seek for it on the net.
So something is going wrong. Plex should be looking at where my existing files are stored for that tv show before just creating a new file.
Plex also created a folder named Season 04 where I use Season 4. This is not as big an issue though somewhat annoying.
Is there a fix in the works or a post-processing script out there that fixes this?
Plex DVR uses the Plex Naming conventions outlined in the documentation.

I suppose you could develop a post-processing script to work around this but once I embraced organizing my files the Plex way things got good. Far less agent problems.
Here is the snippet from Plex’s supposed naming convention. They even say they don’t use the year typically.
_Standard Television Series
TV Shows can be one-off, episode/series, or date-based shows. It is important that both the folder structure and each episode filename be correct for shows to be correctly matched. If you’re not sure whether a show is episode/series or date based, check TheTVDB.com and name it as it appears there.
By default, Plex matches against TheTVDB.com, so you should name and organize your content based on the information on that site.
Tip!: For identically-named remakes, include the year series folder name, e.g. “Battlestar Galactica (2003)” or “Dr. Who (2005)”._
What is the actual name of the show that’s causing issues?
It does this for every show.
Have you ever found the year was left off. If not my suggestion would be to leave the year and migrate the folders that don’t have it to new ones that do. Though it may not be needed exaxrly there are potentially good reasons to have it. The show name you are recording may have never been used before, but that isn’t always the case. This is one of those cases of allowing the software to have more specific data will likely create few problems and solve some that would be impossible with out that information.

It appears you are correct. I just double checked, and all of my shows do the same.
I’m adding to this discussion. I also get the folders created with the year. It seems the programming guide lists the year as the first ever airing year of the program. I too would like the option to not include that information. If for some reason the programming guide decides to change it to whatever year that season aired, it could become problematic.
