DVR is great with a couple of caveats

Great work on the DVR addon guys!

Having now used it solidly for a few months I have noticed two main issues:

  1. Quite a few of the recordings have started early and/or finished early. I am not sure if this is down to the quality of the EPG data or a bug, but it has happened quite a few times, which makes me think it’s a bug. My humax can accurately record anything and is not affected by shows/movies overrunning and/or being shifted in the schedule. The recordings from my humax only ever have a few seconds of padding either side of the thing I’m trying to record. If they can do it I’m sure you can too!
  2. Sometimes I have to select “new and repeat airings” to get a recording of a series. I have to do this with brand new series as well. I also have to change the setting from just “new airings” half way through a season as it seems to lose its place. This doesn’t happen all the time, but I can see no discernible pattern.

I hope this makes sense… Give me a shout if you require more information.

For #1 is the starting early and/or finished early by any chance a multiple of the padding time you have set?

For #2 could it be that some shows broadcast a few times during the 1st week. Probably only the first episode is marked as the original/new broadcast while the others aren’t new (even though it’s the latest episode).

Plex could have a conflict of recording to many shows and sees that this show could be recorded later to relieve the conflict but then it’s not the new show anymore hence the need for changing the settings.

Any chance #2 could be something like that?
Carlo

I concur, I have to set mine to "“new and repeat airings” or it doesn’t see ANY upcoming episodes - even if there’s a new episode tomorrow. Perhaps the reason, for me, is that the guide is only showing shows airing tonight.

Thanks for the reply Carlo.

I have not set any padding. The mention of padding was only related to how my humax works.

This has happened both for shows whose episodes are repeated during the week and those that are not. As I said this is not consistent and does not happen all the time.
Having said that, my Humax can distinguish very clearly what is a repeat, a repeat of a repeat (as you described) and what is new. Even for repeats themselves. So, if I schedule a repeat of a season to be recorded, I will get that repeat alone.
With this one, it seems it’s an all or nothing situation, so clearly something’s wrong. It feels like Plex is not using the progids et al quite right.

@TheBeardedLlama for your info, Humax is probably using the EPG data that is broadcast by freeview (both 7 days and EIT (Now / Next)), therefor it is constantly getting the correct data every few mins, this is why no padding is required, and why overrun’s from live events etc are recorded perfectly. Unfortunately Plex DVR does not use the data that is being broadcast and has to rely on GraceNote, and to make maters worse it is only updated once per day.

so until Plex decides to invest time in coding for UK transmission EPG Data, this is something you are just going to have to live with.

the same is for new/repeats the data from gracenote is really bad for UK, you can’t rely on it for new flags, best just set everything to new/repeat and trash what you don’t need.

@andyblac1974 yes I am aware how the Humax works. Yes, clearly, the EPG data source Plex uses is lacking to say the least. That is what my OP was pointing out for Plex.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the purpose of a feedback forum is to give feedback. As DVR is still in beta, that is precisely what I’m doing in the hope that

Telling me to live with it, is utterly pointless in this context. I am indeed living with it. However, my hope is that by the time we exit beta I shall no longer have to do so.

i know where your coming from, i was just saying don’t expect this anytime soon, i did not mean to come across sharp. but i do not see them ever coding for this, just for UK, and coding this type of thing for ALL countries, is something i just can’t see plex doing.

Well if Humax can do it then so can Plex.
Any company that has any sort of DVR offering does have to do that, so I do expect that they will eventually do it.
The timing of it, I’m not sure, but I do expect it to happen
They have done this for a lot of other things, e.g. TV apps, so I can’t agree with you on that one.

the question is, more to do with, licensing pretty sure FreeView have it covered
