DVR playback no longer works on FireTV and Android

DVR playback no longer works just after a recent player upgrade to FireTV. Upgrade to my Android device also makes DVR playback fail. Playback on Apple phone and Windows client still works. On FireTV the playback does nothing. On Android the player seems to reset and send me back to the main page whenever I select the recording to play. I stopped Malwarebytes. No help.

Confirmed that the client upgrade from 8.5.2.20133 to 8.6.0.20351 broke it. I have three FireTV devices and all three broke in the same way just after updating the client.

I echo this. Neither my Shield, Bravia or Tivostream 4K will playback DVR recordings. At best they skip around and have no audio, at worst it dumps me back to the homescreen.

I’m having LiveTV issues with the FireTV app. Playback runs for a few minutes, then it just stalls (spinning icon). I have to go back, select something other than livetv/dvr, then go back and select a channel. It will then go for a few more minutes again. On occasion the whole app is just locked up and crashes.
Live TV on Windows and iOS devices works just fine. The FireTV also has no problems playing DVD movies I have in Plex, or other apps like Netflix or Disney+.

I don’t know which version broke it, but this started happening a week (maybe two?) or so ago afaik.

My live tv works fine. It’s just the DVR recordings that dont work well on Android clients.

Having the same exact issue. Doing some testing now to find out what exactly is the cause of the issue. What I have noticed is that the Plex transcoder process quits for some reason which probably stems from the firetv app not being able to direct play 1080i.

Another interesting detail. The playback from recorded DVR work fine on FireTV when the item to be played back is selected from the “recently added” menu. It’s only when you try to playback that same item from the “playback & DVR” and then “schedule” menu does the playback not work at all.

Client and server logs attached. Note to Plex: will you PLEASE investigate this problem? All you need is a FireTV and a Plex server with DVR content to playback. Here is yet ANOTHER interesting detail. Playback works on an Android device in MOBILE display mode. It does not playback on the same device when set to TV mode when selecting the item to be played from the DVR Schedule menu tree.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to switch back from TV mode to MOBILE mode on my Android. I’ve found other forum arguments between Plex and end users about why one would want to do this. Well, this is one reason - when TV mode doesn’t work!

Um… is anyone from Plex going to respond to this ticket? This has been broken since September. I can’t playback DVR recordings on an Android device. I specifically paid for a lifetime subscription to Plex for the purpose of playback of live TV on a DVR. Now I can’t use it. Won’t anyone at Plex please take a look at this problem PLEASE?

Those are about Live TV. This thread says DVR so I’m assuming these are issues playing back recorded shows, which is a different issue.

Different issue or not - are you saying that you’re ignoring this because apparently it’s in the wrong category? Shall I move it to another category instead? Will that get you to actually investigate the problem? PLEASE? This is a playback of recorded DVR shows from antenna issue. Playback is BROKEN on all Android based devices I’ve tried. I can easily demonstrate it to you, provided someone at Plex takes some interest in fixing it. This was broken with a player update, not a server update. DVR use is the ONLY reason I bought a PLex Pass and it’s now been broken for more than 3 months. What gives?

Plex has made it abundantly clear that they don’t care about fixing the showstopping bugs within their paid features. I’d recommend looking into Channels DVR or Emby if you want live TV and DVR features that actually work as advertised.

Or Jellyfin. I been using Jellyfin almost exclusively for about a week and half now. Windows server/client and Android/AndroidTV clients. The android clients are still a work in progress but they work and are actively being maintained. I use NextPVR for DVR and record everything into a Jellyfin library folder. No problems watching recordings in progress this way. And the FireTV client on my $35 Fire TV Stick Lite is working fabulously. AC3/EAC3/DTS all passthrough to my receiver perfectly. There are no constant random playback problems. Honestly, it’s been a breath of fresh air compared to my Plex experience for the past year (especially on Android and Live TV/DVR).

Sorry, typo in my last message. I was referring to the links mention in the comment above my last comment. “Those” are for Live TV. The issue you are reporting is playing back recorded content. I like to keep threads focus to a specific problem. Issues with Live TV gets a bit more complicated. We have others who are better at investigating Live TV issues, so I’ll leave those other threads to them. I can take a look if there are no responses there later.

I’m not ignoring this thread. I do need new logs as previously requested so I can investigate.
