I’ve used Plex off and on for years and about a week ago decided to take the plunge and try the Live TV and DVR functionality. I purchased an HDHomerun Prime (and a Plex Pass), set up the cablecard and all has been working fairly well, with a couple of user-related hiccups. I have a very strong signal, according to the HDHomerun interface.
Last night I sat down to watch a couple of things that were recorded the night before. The first show I wanted to watch was listed in Recently Added TV so I clicked on the box. The episode name and other info was correct, so I clicked play, and it immediately started playing the very first episode in my library, rather than the newest episode, which I had just selected to play. I looked at the server and indeed can see the episode in the recordings folder. I tried on my chromebook with the same result. Frustrated, I went to the network’s app, enjoyed the show, even if I had to sit through commercials.
After watching this episode I went to watch another show and experienced the exact same results.
I am using the FireTV 4k as my front-end, Ubuntu on the server. Same playback result on Android and through the web interface. I played numerous other recordings, recorded before and after this without issue. I restarted the Plex Server, the Ubuntu machine, and the FireTV, which didn’t help.
I downloaded the logs but have no idea how to read or understand the info contained within. I’m not sure when/when/how is appropriate to include these.
Not sure if this is the right area to post this in or if I’m even going about getting help in the right manner, but hopefully this is at least the right place to start.
Now I’m seeing this same issue with many recordings. It would be great if someone from the Plex team could weigh in. This is a serious issue. Glad I didn’t go for the lifetime Plex Pass yet.
I do. After doing a bit more research, it seems that this issue is related to the Android AND FireTV apps. Since I first reported this, I tried going through the browser. I was able to play the recordings that were an issue. I was also able to play via Google Cast. Not ideal, but at least it worked. I use FireTV 4Ks throughout the house and had forgotten that our main TV (Vizio) has a Plex app built in. I am able to play everything correctly through the app on the Vizio TV. There was an Android update this morning which did not address the issue on my Android devices.
I continue to see the same errors this morning – either a message that states that the Plex client is “Unable To Play Media,” or something about not being able to find the media I’m trying to play, or simply skipping the episode I choose and playing the first episode that I have available of the series I’m trying to watch. I experience the same result with the Android app and the FireTV app, but again, the seemingly older version of the app on my Vizio TV has no problem.
Thanks for your response…hopefully this sheds a bit of light?
EDIT: I finally figured out the permissions issue. I do wish that there were more clear instructions. Maybe a tl:dr along with the more extensive write-up.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks for this. I’m feeling rather stupid at the moment, I’m afraid. I followed the guide but there was no output from the dd command and not message as to why it was not created. I was beginning to wonder if it had to do with permissions, as I am having a hard time following the Linux permissions guide. I decided to move everything to another drive that I know (thought?) had permissions correctly set. It seems that rescanning/updating metadata doesn’t catch ANY .ts files. I’m lost and now I have dozens of shows that I can’t watch. I following the directions for moving media, but now none of my recording are seen in their new location. I’m extremely frustrated at this point.
