DVR Program Guide UI

I’ve lost confidence in them delivering something so basic, which should have been there from the beginning. I only use iOS and tvOS devices and I have settled on a working solution for my DVR troubles. I use the Channels app for live TV viewing and DVR. The recordings directory is tied into my Plex “TV Shows” library and they get picked up and updated automatically? Channels offers a far superior live TV and DVR experience. It’s amazing what the MUCH smaller teams with Channels, Infuse, Emby, etc. can do with far fewer resources compared to Plex.

“Channels app”? Within Plex or is that some other application unrelated to Plex?

Hmmm once again you don’t get it that just list a of option for the Libraries
I don’t want TV Recording as separate TV and Movie areas
You can have different libraries for each if you wish OR you can add multiple directories to scan to one library.

In either case you can preverse the layout you wish to have on disc while having everything in organize library(s) in Plex. This goes for DVR as well. If for example you have 3 directories making up your Movies library (DVR, BluRay, Recordings) when you go to record a movies you can choose where to save the recording so you choose the library path on disc pointing to the Recordings directory.

This allows me to have 1 unified MOVIES library in Plex but have separate source paths on disc. Looking at my disc paths I can easily see what I have on DVD that I might want to update to BR given the chance or what I’ve recorded that I might want to replace with DVR or BR to get rid of channel logos and whatnot.

I actually did just this. I used to have two separate libraries for my movies based on internal groupings. After a while I couldn’t really come up with a good reason for it. Ultimately I just pointed my one movies library to both folder locations.

Not as a Local User Account you can’t
What do you mean? I have 5 users in my Home. When I start Plex on my devices it asks me to login to one of those accounts. These users are part of my HOME and are LOCAL users.

Carlo
I do this as well. Prior to home users everyone had to have their own Plex account which was a PITA because they would constantly bombarded with “upgrade to PlexPass” messages. Now, I manage them all, no more hassles and I can filter the accounts by library, ratings, etc. My 7 year old only gets stuff rated “G” for example. The adult accounts are all locked with PIN numbers.

https://getchannels.com

That looks cool and don’t mind paying a one-time $15 for an app, but it looks like a subscription service for DVR. Am I reading that right? $100/year?

There also another one called SichboPVR and no subscription needed

@jrcorwin said:

$8/month for the DVR service. There is also a on-time charge for the app, if you want it. I use it because the the live TV experience with Plex is just plain bad for a variety of reasons, including unnecessary transcoding.

The SichboPVR option might work if you have a compatible tuner and can provide the guide data. No support for live TV however. It’s stickily a PVR.

No thanks that $100 a years when I get schedules direct for $25 a years
It has wide number compatible supported tuner
It has Live TV support

Well it’s a non-starter for me without support for HDHomerun devices and macOS.

I’m traveling and haven’t tesearched these alternate packages but I have 7 total Silicon Dust tuners, including 4 OTA. I’m not changing tuners. If the alternates can’t in fact utilize them it’s a nonstarter for me too.

One could say the same thing about that Channels app only supported HDHomeRun devices so I guest it back to square one LoL

What are you asking for that isn’t part of the HOME feature set you have access to as a Plex Pass member?

Carlo
Can you make a step by step instruction
I see no way to add a password once I add user
With Emby it easy add user and set a password all done there no need for any thing else

Create a Plex account with username/password and then in your Plex go to add user in your home and select the option to add existing Plex user.

If I’m understanding your question properly YOU don’t make the password for the users. They make their own if they want. They still need a Plex account, but it doesn’t have to be a PlexPass. Then once they do that you add that user account to your “Home” via email. When they accept they can see your server and create a PIN themselves if they want.

What I did personally with my 5 user home is to create ALL the accounts on Plex.tv myself. Then I logged into every one of those accounts myself and set them up the way I wanted. THEN I disseminated the info to the users.

For example, my 7 year old has a log in and it is restricted to only things rated “G”. He has no PIN setup so he can just click his initial and he’s in.

My wife has her own account that I set up and she has access to all libraries except 3D. I set up a PIN for her and told her how to use it. All she has to do is click her initial and enter her PIN.

Does that make sense?

No they give me one or they have me pick a password for them
This for Local over lan only there no need for this Plex Web would like to sign in to your Plex account that only used for over internet remote viewing.
As I said with Emby I setup true local access and go to http://192.168.1.2:8096/emby/ pick a user and sign in
But all I get is this with Plex

Did you NOT SEE the above photo if I go to http://192.168.1.2:32400/web/index.html I never see the user members page

Keep in mind in a HOME you can add normal Plex users or MANAGED USERS.

The normal Plex user will have an account at PLEX.TV while a MANAGED USER will not.

MANAGED USERS are perfect for GUEST USERS or young kids or visiting relatives. On any device a normal person must log in. But after login they can choose to use any user who is part of the HOME account. You can optionally have a 4 digit pin code on any account like your admin account.

So this allows uncle BOB or auto BETTY to have a HOME account on your system or allow the babysitter to use your Plex system on YOUR DEVICES. They won’t be able to use their own computer, tablet or phone since they aren’t a normal user and can’t login.

This way the babysitter, Bob or Betty can use Plex at your house in the living room, basement or bedroom (where ever you have Plex setup).

You can use all the normal filtering and library setup routines so none of them see your seedier libraries. You can set the GUEST to only allow up to PG-13 stuff while maybe set Bob and Betty up to R.

This can also work on tablets as well. You just need to the app auto login with a normal home account first. So even Bob could use the household community tablet or computer to watch Plex this way.

Carlo

I have several users in my home. My main Plex user account setup with one email, a test user account setup with a different email, and my son has an account with his email. We can each login to Plex using our account. My son does not have my password for my account. Once in Plex because we are all in the same home we pick the account for us, my son can set a pin on his account if he desires and I have a pin setup for my accounts. We each have our own playlists, can watch Live TV, etc.

It doesn’t need to be that way on local lan at leases Emby has it done right.
What happing when your internet goes down for a week you petty much SOL with Plex.

It’s a bit different then the way Emby works. Both have advantages and disadvantages to the approach they took.
Plex is working to allow better caching of info for those times when you lose internet. But you can always login as the last user.

For what it’s worth I too like the Emby style login/user account settings better but for anyone who knows me, knows I prefer as much control locally as possible. However the way Plex does it with Plex.tv accounts is much simpler for the average admin. So they each have advantages.

When was the last time you look at Emby ?.

Every day.
I run both Emby and Plex systems as well as Kodi and a couple of lesser known media projects. I’m a media maniac

I’m not sure why you asked the question. Anything in particular you didn’t like or disagree with I said?

I just wondering as I haven’t seen you over there.
I do agree with you on Plex.tv accounts it is very simple for the new user admin, but a bit to simple and really lacking control over direct local access with out internet.
