dvr recording quality

hi all,

plex dvr running on Ubuntu 16.4.
version 1.9.2.4285
hdhomerun prime tuner
viewing devices amazon fire tv, hard wired to network, no wifi

my recordings have strange bars that it’s hard for me to explain. it’s like horizontal small bars around the edges of objects. I’ve attached an image. when viewing, the status on the video is as follows:

converting throttled
video direct stream
audio direct stream

The channel is interlaced (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlaced_video ) and the client or your TV is not converting it to progressive scan (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_scan). Try it on another client and see if it transcodes it. Try it on another tv. Try a different channel that is already progressive. Some channels are 1080i, 720p, 480p, etc. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television_in_the_United_States#Format_standards

In the US, CBS is 1080i and ABC is 720p.

Thanks for your reply. Upon your telling me the issue, I did some research and it appears its a major issue with interlacing and amazon fire. I’ve not used it like this before but its a bit of a bummer and i just moved everything to work on amazon fire from my xbox one…doh! thanks again.

@rhltechie One option is to transcode the recording to deinterlace the video. I am running on Windows 10 and use MCEBuddy (which in turn using handbrake, ffmpeg, and comskip) to transcode and remove commercials. Since you are on Ubuntu, there are scripts/guides that users talk about in the forums to handle this task. You could either keep the same quality and deinterlace or in addition you could compress the file, saving space.
