I just noticed a couple recurring dvr recorded titles are not correct. The recorded file title and media info are correct but the display name in the plex library is not correct. Anyone else seeing this?
I see this isn’t impacting users but its got my wife frustrated which has me in a pinch for continuing our cord cutting trial. This only seems to happen to certain programs we record. Yesterdays 20/20 episode title was “New DNA Analysis in a Murder” (which is what was actually recorded) but the plex displays the recorded title “Scientology: A War Without Guns” which was an episode that aired Jan 6th. Anyone, anyone? Bueller, Bueller?
I have seen recording titles not match playback titles many times. Plex uses gracenote.com for episode information when recording programs. Plex uses thetvdb.com for episode information when playing back. Some shows don’t always match Season#/Episode# between the 2 systems.
It’s annoying and has been pointed out many times on this forum. I don’t think Plex has ever officially responded here. Some ninjas will tell you that thetvdb.com is run by users so, you can just go in there and correct their errors. But thetvdb.com is pretty huffy about changing their DB entries to match the “flawed” real world.
I usually edit the file name after Plex is done recording so that it matches thetvdb.com in a few cases where they differ.
Seems like you are caught in a problem with different sites using different naming conventions for seasons/episodes. The ABC pages for the 20/20 doesn’t seem to list a season/episode for each episode, they just give the date and a title.
IMDB seems to be matching somewhat to the ABC site for episode names but not completely, they are calling the episode from last week “Slender Man Attackers” with Season 41 Episode 19 for the episode data. They do not have any details on the show for last night.
TheTVDB.com on the other hand does not have an episode for last week but this weeks episode they have titled “Would You Kill For Love?” with Season 41 Episode 7. Which does match the ABC site.
Meanwhile on the TVGuide.com website when I look at the episodes being aired it seems the description of the show matches with what ABC says but the titles do not match completely. TVGuide is also using Season 40 for the current shows being aired.
Once a show is recorded Plex matches to TheTVDB.com for the details. If the show was recorded as Season 40 Episode 20 then it would match back to the Season 40 Episode 20 in TheTVDB.com.
Other users have seen similar issues with other shows when there are several sources all with different season/episode data.

We are all caught in Plex using more than one site. If Plex would just use the same DB for recording AND playback most of these problems would disappear.
Okay, this makes me feel a bit better…it was lonely on the island.
