Being a cordcutter, the hardest part is live sports.
I was excited for Plex DVR support and quickly purchased a tuner and antenna.
I’ve been dismayed though with its implementation so far.
There doesn’t seem to be any way to access a recording that is currently taking place.
I was home an hour late for the start of a game (Kids Birthday Party… no changing that).
My hope would be to start the recording from the beginning, and slowly catch back up to real time by skipping the commercials.
However there seems to be no way to access the recording as it is happening. My options seem limited to watching live (defeats the purpose of recording), or waiting another few hours for the game to finish and finally be available.
Am I missing something here?
I tried to get it to work on my Roku, 4th Gen AppleTV, and the web browser. Only seem to let me go straight to live. I have a fairly decent media server computer, so transcode shouldn’t be an issue.
If this is not yet a feature, then please please make it a priority. Sports beg for a DVR, but if it’s all (wait for it to finish) or nothing (start live whenever you get back home), then it’s pretty much worthless.
If you have a client with dvr support you can browse the guide and launch the program that is recording from there, choosing to play from the beginning. It’s not a very intuitive way of doing it though and it makes accessing the recordings on clients without dvr support impossible. Would be much better if the recording was added immediately to the library allowing any client to play it with the obvious limitation that you can’t fast forward past the currently live point. This is how all pvr devices work.
If you have started a recording and then whilst the recording is in progress, you select Play then you should get a dialogue box asking if you wish to start watching from the start of the recording. See screenshots from Plex Web app and Plex for iOS
There is an issue that is under investigation for Plex for iOS where selecting Watch From Start may result in a hang. I will update this forum topic when the problem is resolved and a fix is released
Watch from start is great BUT would be awesome if we could easily skip through the commercials during a recording in process. The 10 second skip does not work on the Apple TV when you are watching something that is being recorded still. It also doesn’t scrub so you are forced to watch commercials until the game is over, then wait for it to appear in Plex.
I had an issue the Watch From Start feature not working but, I setup static IPs for the HDHomeRuns and re-added then to Plex and it seems to work now. Just can’t skip during current recordings.
