DVR - Watch From Start - Why doesn't it work on Android TV clients?

At the risk of being involved in this argument much more than I want to be, I would like to make the point that I don’t think that many people would actually consider the need to record a channel for 24 hours to be a required feature for a DVR. In addition, technically you can set up Plex to record a program for 24 hours on a channel if you would like by setting the minutes after the recording to 1440. Although because of the annoying bug, you may not be able to access the recording once the original recording is done.

With that being said, I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones. I have had very little issues with Plex DVR. It always has recorded shows that I wanted and skipped duplicates when necessary.

Really, here is how Emby does it.

If they are the same name they will be appended sequentially.

Luckily you use emby and not Plex or any other DVR provided by all the major TV providers.

Every DVR I have ever used (other than plex) has a manual recording option by channel/time and a number of them have had “Record all including duplicates” for series recording. They were DVRs. I have never seen any DVR-like software that so actively makes it impossible to record programs that you want to record.

I am affected 7 nights a week by this. I want to record the 11:00 CTV news every night. But it is often significantly delayed by sports, usually football. The news is rebroadcast at either 6am or 7am most days (but not every day). So I’d like to record both since the 11:00 airing can end up being all football. Can’t in Plex. No problem in NextPVR. These kinds of problems occur all the time with sports and Saturday Night Live in Plex. They’ve had 3 or 4 years to improve the situation. They choose not to.

If that’s what you think then you should create a feature suggestion. Or use tvheadend.

Manual recording feature requests have been there for years. The feature suggestion section is where good ideas go to die.

Look, I stated my opinion that Plex Live TV/DVR is not a good product/module and I don’t think they intend to make it good. They will do only enough so that they can say it is “fit for the purpose intended” and use it to sell Plex Passes. Somehow we got here.

Emby is a horrible app.

Elaborate?

Before we go down this rabbit hole, may I suggest that we move this conversation to a new post so we can finally close this topic and mark is as solved? I don’t think it help anyone if we drag this topic on with a conversation that doesn’t pertain to the initial point of the post.

I’m just trolling. It can be closed.

For what its worth - this is just a beta release. I would keep it open until it is fully released and more widely applied.

I don’t do the beta updates so I cannot yet confirm if it works or not.

You’re right. It’s likely Plex will break it before the public release.

Don’t you think this has been done (incl. demands from users  ) years ago?
I have done one by myself…

I don’t want to get involved into your “discussion”. You’re always telling people what they should do (or not do) - so smart, so clever - instead of discussing features that they want or bugs they don’t like. You lost me long time ago with that attitude. Naturally, you have a different self reflection. Knowing this, I usually just avoid your posts.
But the cited one is just ridiculous… therefore I jumped in.
Having said that, I jump out again.

And with that, everyone knows exactly who you are. Every time someone points out that you are factually or logically incorrect, you simply lash out with random statements that are often inconsistent with things you have recently said. You’re as guilty about complaining about Plex as anyone I’ve seen in the forums. I have to agree with you on the one point – you are definitely a troll.

At this point it’s best to just not to feed the troll. He’ll be singing Plex’s praises in one post and saying all end users are idiots, then in the next post say how terrible Plex is and how they can’t get anything right. I think someone needs to get him some medication for bipolar disorder already.

Well, as the original person who posted this (this thread/post) and after nearly 12months, I thought this could all have been fixed?

I’ve not loaded (or opted) for the BETA version, but just attempted to watch from beginning. Nope, it’s still not working!

I started to record BBC News, using the web client, via channel 101 (HD channel, as apposed to channel 1 whish is SD). I left it 10 minutes and when I went to my TV to see if I could watch from the start, two things I noticed:

  1. If I scroll through the guide to channel 101, it does NOT say it’s recording. Only channel 1 says it’s recording. I checked that the setting of “Prefer HD was selected”. This is a problem as the TV is showing incorrect information, but when I check via the web client, it shows both channels 1 and 101 as “recording”, which is just messed up. The TV says one thing, the web client says another!

  2. When I tell the TV to watch from beginning (via channel 1), it just started to play from the current time. I was unable to “rewind” (skip backwards) but I had to pause the TV stream for a short while, and then started to press the skip backwards and was able to get it to skip back to the start of the recording. I stopped the TV playback, exited Plex and re-did it again with exactly the same issue and fudging to get it to work

… To top it all off! If I attempt to watch the recording from the browser, I’m not even asked whether I want to watch from the beginning! I can’t even skip backwards to the started of the recording. I tried the pause then skip trick, and nothing. I can’t skip backwards at all.

… And no, I’ve not tried the Windows Client, I lost heart!

Again, I’m not attempting to use a BETA version of the android app on my TV. But it’s been nearly a year since I reported this and it’s still not working

@elan & @DaveBinM - can it really be 12 months and we’re still having these issues? I’ve not been keeping up with this whole thread as I can see it’s taken many twists and turns. But the original post and the general sentiment remains the same…

A) Can we please put some time into the DVR function and try and at least having it working as most of us expect?

B) (I don’t know if this has happened yet) Can you think about, and look at, a better way to post problems into an issues logging system, e.g. like GitHub, where problems can be logged, categorised and progressed? As posting in the forum really isn’t getting to the problems that some of us are facing recognised.

I have a different thread/post (probably closed now - Commercial Skip - plays TV shows 'double time' on Android TV (UK 1080i)) where there is a playback issue, which is separate to this thread/post, but is still a major issue for the android client. But I’m loathed to attempt to re-post more information (including captured video of the playback fault) as I feel there is no correct place to raise really issues with the software/platform?

It’s only been (recently, yesterday in fact) corrected in the beta. It’s not made it to GA yet.

There is not one single time I’ve called any end users an idiot, you implying that onto yourself with projection.

If you haven’t loaded the beta version of the app it’s not going to work obviously. You do realize you need to load the beta version for this to work, right?

Thanks @kegbeach for making me laugh. I’m glad I’m not the only one shaking my head.
