I am running the latest Plex Media Server on Ubuntu Server 20.04.4 LTS on a desktop PC and recently discovered that the Plex server will not successfully stream any videos remotely to any devices that has the EAC3 audio track. I am able to stream the same videos locally with no issues. I have tried some of the recommended fixes like deleting the codecs file and restarting Plex but this is hit and miss for me. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I have also seen in my resolution investigation that this EAC3 streaming/transcoding issue has been brought up back in 2018 with no clear fix or patch. More and more videos are being encoded with the EAC3 audio as default. Is Plex going to really address this problem as what I consider it to be a very seasoned mature software?
Update: After performing some more troubleshooting with a Plex shared user we might have stumbled onto the actual problem with streaming EAC3 encoded videos. We found that the Plex client settings may have something to do with it. After getting into the Plex app. Select Settings → Advanced → Audio passthrough or just Passthrough and change from HDMI to Disabled and back to HDMI. This worked for an Amazon Fire TV Stick to correct the streaming issue. This might fix android phone streaming by toggling from Disabled to HDMI and then back to DIsabled.
