"Edit then convert" or "Convert then edit" .TS files

Hi,

I am converting my LiveTV-dvr .ts files to .mp4 to avoid transcoding where possible and am not using Comskip as that doesn’t appear accurate enough (sometimes I lose parts of the show).

I don’t ask Plex to convert whilst recording as my server is on a QNAP TS-453Bmini and not sure if it is capable of recording, converting whilst potentially streaming s well. I also don’t know how good Plex conversion is (compared to Handbrake).

I have done some simple tests and think (but am really not sure) that editing/trimming out the adverts etc before converting to .mp4 works better than converting first, trimming 2nd.

I am editing/converting on a Mac with:

  • Movavi split movie 2 (to trim and cut)
  • Handbrake (to convert) using the Apple TV 1080p30 Surround preset

Does anyone else have any experience of this and/or have any recommendations for the sequence and software to use?
