Editing metadata results in "Couldn't retrieve the play queue for this item."

When I add a movie to a Plex library, the scanner finds and matches it normally, and pressing play on every client I’ve tested plays it back exactly as expected. However, if I click the pencil and change the poster/background, Tizen and iOS will display an error message about not being able to retrieve the play queue for this item. On Android (Pixel/Shield) the movie will play after a delay, but the app will lag or freeze upon backing out. Notifications in the dashboard and Varys are also delayed on these plays.

If I refresh the metadata on the item server side, the problem resolves itself. If I edit the item further, the problem returns, until I refresh the metadata again.

I recently began rebuilding my libraries on a new Mac after my last one died. My TV libraries went up without a hitch, and after many tests, I have yet to replicate the issue with a TV show. The problem exists on all of my movie libraries however. I’m a film fan, not an especially accomplished tech understander, but I have been using Plex on Mac for about five years. I never had this problem before, but I admit I am at the edge of my understanding. I have been searching for answers. So far I have turned off and turned back on everything, including the router. I have updated PMS once, for the most recent release, and nothing changed. I optimized the database and cleaned bundles. I attempted to repair the database using SQLite, and quickly surpassed my knowledge level, but asked a friend with a bigger brain to help. They said it was fine, so I began rolling back the database from backups, a few days at a time, and then replicating the issue. I never found a time when it didn’t occur. Changing the poster on any movie breaks the server’s ability to play it. Refreshing the metadata resolves the issue, until I make another alteration. I reverted the database to the present and began asking questions on Reddit. It was recommended that I use third party software to handle my metadata, and that I check permissions. I’ve not gotten very far, but I’ve sunk a lot of time into trying to understand my problem.

I really want to get back to rebuilding my libraries, to restore what I had before. I bought a new computer with this very much in mind, and I’ve been very happy with the performance so far. But this problem makes me take pause and makes me feel uncertain about continuing. I don’t want to bake a wrinkle into my new server so early on, and just have this be a problem forever. I can just remember to refresh metadata every time I change something, and I turned on the setting ‘Refresh local metadata every three days’ and ‘Refresh library metadata periodically’, but this really feels like something that should be understandable. Without knowing if I’ve done something wrong, I don’t know if I’ll make it worse.

Please, I need guidance on resolving this. I’ll try to work through whatever steps I need to, and I thank you in advance for your patience.
