Editions, versions, and shared extras

Server Version#: 1.41.4.9463
Player Version#:

So currently I have
Movies
Panic Room (2002)
Panic Room (2002).mp4
Panic Room (2002) 4K.mkv
Behind the scenes
Files
Deleted Scenes
Files
Etc

I have the files split apart and each with their own posters. The 4k file is tagged 4K and then I have the tag 4k restricted on users that I share my library with

If I don’t split then I lose the ability to limit my ability to prevent 4k remote streaming. And I like the separate posters.

No extras show up on either.

So I’m reading here that I should take each edition (like in the case of say blade runner) into their own top level folders and then drop the extras into one of them (or each). First question: if I want extras to appear for each edition can I create a symlink for the extras folders from one of the editions to the other edition folder and will that work?

Now that’s for editions. But what about versions? How do I handle same movie just one 1080p and one 4k but have them split but have extras? Do I create two top level folders for the film and if so what do I name them? Because they are not editions they are versions.

And the more complex question would be if I have a film like the Cell where I have two theatricals (one 4k one HD) two directors cut (one 4k one HD) and one dp cut in hd. 5 files. I would y know how to organize this. All in having the ability to tag the 4ks to exclude them from remote streaming and maintain separate posters.

Unless someone has a better mousetrap.

I hope any of this made sense.

You have a naming issue, https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/

using the correct file names {edition-4K} will allow you to keep all of them in the same folder.

Thanks of the quick reply. However, it Absolutely does not work. Every post here about this issue says that if you have more than one copy of the movie in there same folder and the extras disappear. I named the movies per that article and your advice and no extras on any of them. And I refreshed the metadata on each entry. Nope. Only one trailer appears that i assume comes from Plex.

As an example in one folder:

Mojave > Movies (Blu-Ray) > The Cell (2000)
> Behind The Scenes
> Deleted Scenes
> Featurettes
> Interviews
> Scenes
> Shorts
> Trailers
The Cell (2000) {edition-4K Directors Cut.mkv
The Cell (2000) {edition-4K Theatrical Cut.mkv
The Cell (2000) {edition-Directors Cut}.m4v
The Cell (2000) {edition-Theatrical Alt Color}.m4v
The Cell (2000) {edition-Theatrical Cut}.m4v```

Can you provide a full file listing? Id like to play around with your case and see what I can replicate.

You cannot share extras between editions. Each edition should be in it’s own movie folder with it’s own extras in it’s folder.

You can see the note in blue in the doc on extras https://support.plex.tv/articles/local-files-for-trailers-and-extras/#toc-2

Got ya. So I did exactly that. And of course the one folder that contained e trays showed extras. Perfect. So here’s my next question.

I can copy the extras to all the other folders. Silly since that can chew up a lot of space but satisfied my ocd.

Can I use symlinks in the other movie folders pointing to the ordinal extras folders? Now I tried this on a Mac server and it did not work. No extras appeared in the movie that has symlinked folders of extras.

However in some threads here some people have said that they have done this (albeit on a different OS). When I’ve asked how, I have not gotten a reply.

Any definitive answer?
