I’ve read guides on how to setup music for Plex but I’m getting nowhere. Previously I’ve maintained a meticulously tagged library and used it successfully with WinAmp, FooBar2000, SqueezeBox and others. The library includes MP3, MPC and FLAC files which I encoded over the years as disk space became cheaper.
Plex reads the MP3 files correctly, these are tagged with ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4 tags. The notes about using AlbumArtist don’t appear to matter hear.
Plex reads most of the FLAC files correctly, tagged with native FLAC tags.
However, anything else is a mess. The MPC (musepack) files which I have for many of my favourite artists from around 10 years ago are tagged perfectly, using APEv2 tags and also ID3v1 tags for software that can’t read APE. Plex seems totally dumbfounded by these files. Plex is able to retrieve album artwork for the files and can at times guess which artist the album belongs to but I have a huge number of “[Unknown Album]” entries which are very hard to manually match.
I have enabled the embedded metadata for my library and the local media data for my Last.fm agent and made the local metadata the first choice, but local metadata is NEVER READ!
I’ve also used Kodi, which was also far better at scanning music files. As the Plex Media Scanner portion is just a Python script, does a more “advanced” version of the media scanner exist somewhere which would actually check the embedded metadata correctly? I am also finding that once an album is tagged as [Unknown Album] or [Unknown Artist] only a manual edit in Plex can update the values, it seems that the media scanner gives up once that value is set.
So, does anyone have a proper Media Scanner plugin script for Music files? Seems that this is using the Python Mutagen library for tag reading so there is no reason why the data shouldn’t be available. I’d like to be able to stream MPC to chromecast audio endpoints as well as FLAC.
I have a folder stucture of ‘Artist/Album/’ so I went and changed this to ‘Artist/Artist - Album/’ and then created a test library out of that one artist folder, the files are still shown as ‘[Unknown Album]’ even though the filename shows this data!

sorry for necrobumping on an old thread, but has anyone found a solution yet? Like the OP, I also have lots of Musepack (MPC) files perfectly tagged that Plex won’t recognize in any way…
Lack of interest from the Devs… I manually fixed most of the entries that Plex misread and then started moving to flac instead.
Would love to see the (presumably simple) fix to properly enable MPC but I can’t see how the metadata scanner scripts works myself.
