Enable DVD Playback?

I’ve seen mention before of DVD support in OpenPHT, but I’m not able to find much information on how to enable it - is it actually available? If so, should I be seeing the DVD in OpenPHT? (I don’t).

My wife occasionally gets DVD’s from a friend and she wants to watch when I’m not around, but doesn’t like having to use the player in Ubuntu.

(Oh, and tell me if I’m imagining things!)

This really, and the devs can correct me… is not so much a function of openpht or PHT for that mater… its the fact that plex made a decision years ago to drop native video_ts (dvd) handeling serverside… in the plex universe everything revolves around the server component …

I personally have transcoded my entire library into mkv containers that keep the original streams … just in a format plex works with… it takes seconds per as its not transcoding anything… and I strip trailers etc… which makes them smaller…

Clients like they pi wont direct play due to the video_ts stream so it will transcode server side… but dvd content is not processor intensive like blu ray…

This way you have a lossless copy of the dvd in a format that plex understands with no loss in quality, stripped to main title only, and the whole folder of these can be batch transcoded with handbrake easily because each has been re containered with the correct main title therebuy alowing unattened transcoding…

Its win win…

Yeah, this is one of those Apple moments* that I was frustrated about initially, but year ago, haven’t really missed DVD file support. I keep an optical drive in my server, use make MKV to rip, handbrake to shrink if needed. A $50 Blu-ray player is a good alternative is that’s not user-friendly enough.

*and no, I won’t feel the same about the headphone jack. Ever.

Yeah I thought I was imagining things!

I have ripped our DVD collection to the server in mkv and that works well. It’s more for when the wife has borrowed/bought a DVD and I’m not around to transcode it for her, she wants to be able to play them directly.

I guess she’ll have to live with using the mouse to open the video player in Ubuntu and stop whinging

Can you auto-open the video player when a DVD is inserted like in Windows?

I reckon that’ll do the trick for now!
