"Enable HDR tone mapping" - Synology NAS

Server Version#:1.24.3.5033

hi, can anyone confirm that this setting still doesn’t do anything when running PMS as a native app on Synology NAS (DS1019+)

i remember that it was mentioned that it only worked when running PMS in a docker on the synology.

it’s not an issue for my main playback devices (shield) as that has tone mapping built-in.

but it an issue for some other devices that don’t have that function.

do we know if they are ever likely to?

Are they going to? - Yes.

Do we know when Engineering will? - No.

would it be an idea to have this setting greyed out on servers where it’s not supported until it does get support?

also, notice @Trumpy81 has deleted their posts, making the thread look a little strange.

  1. Graying out something which isn’t available makes sense. I’ll ask about that and if they agree, I’ll change the packaging to allow us the control.

  2. In the interrim, you can overlay docker on your existing PMS installation – perfectly – without damaging the native app. Let me know if interested.

  3. Yes, All of Trumpy’s posts being gone does make it look strange. I’ll do the best I can to take over.

Did you see my Synology - DSM 7 (version 2.0) - Docker How-To?

I show the steps you need take to get the UID/GID for “PlexMediaServer”
then how to setup the command line docker to access /dev/dri since it’s blocked in DSM 7 GUI

It’s not at all elegant but gets the job done

i’m not on DSM7, and don’t think i have any plans to upgrade to it in the near future (unless i’m forced to).

The same technique works for DSM 6 too.

Would you like that How-To as well ?

i think i’ll just wait to see if it ever gets added natively.
it’s not an issue for my primary playback devices.

Since I’ve proven to myself that making assumptions always leads me to certain failure, I’ll ask: does doing the Docker Overlay on my Synology DS1520+ (4 core Celeron J4125) allow me to do HDR Tone Mapping on this system?

@DaveTheNerd

If you do the command-line creation of the container (because the Syno gui doesn’t allow passing the GPU), ----

YES, it works.

Matching UID/GID keeps DSM 7 happy.
PMS, because it’s installed, has access to the HW through the UID/GID (the trick)
The runtime libraries are in the docker container
