Enable Sync to Android TV / Streaming boxes

Please enable the sync feature found in the android mobile app on the android tv app version of Plex. I’ve seen hundreds of posts online about people asking if this is possible. I have an Nvidia shield that I take with me travelling, camping and good internet connections are not always available. The ability to sync some of my content would make things a lot easier - I really don’t understand why the feature would not exist on android tv in the first place?
I want to buy a Plex Pass for this reason but I don’t see the value in it if I can’t use the sync. Syncing to my phone and casting is not an acceptable workaround for me and in a lot of cases wouldn’t work.

bump! @Plex is this going to be released in a future update? This seems like a feature that for sure should be available and not just answered with “Android TV doesn’t have sync”

I understand from the forum post
( How can I download content with Plex on Android TV for offline play? )
not all android TV devise will have the storage to make this sensible but nor do all android mobile devices have the option regardless would be nice even if I would probably say unselected/unpind by default

Picked up an Android TV box for the TV in our RV so the kids could watch Plex while traveling and camping.

Unfortunately, there’s not internet access everywhere… “No problem”, I thought, “I pay for Plex pass, so I should be able to sync just like we can do one our phones!” Nope. For some ridiculous reason, we can’t do that on Android TV.

It is simply insane not to support syncing on Andoird TV. In fact, I’m pretty sure that when I experimented with Plex on Android TV years ago (been using plex since nearly its inception), it did support syncing – so this feature seems to have been taken away – just like it was removed on the Windows clients. (No, “downloading” on the Windows clients is not an acceptable replacement for syncing.)

There is now no way to sync content with any of the 10ft UI clients. There used to be when I first paid for Plex. (Windows, and IIRC, AndroidTV, used to allow it, and Plex for windows used to work with remote controls – now you need the HTPC version, and that doesn’t even have a download option.)

Please realize that this is actually an issue, and please fix this ASAP.

Could the regular Android app just be installed into an Android TV device?

What a shame there are no plans yet for this. I have buffering issues with my remote Plex server and this would resolve it.

I’m out of votes as nothing is realized which I voted for and I don’t really understand why votes are limited at all.

Has there been any information on this topic yet?

At this point in time, we have no intention of bringing sync/download features to TV devices.

Portable projector devices like the Anker Nebula Capsule 3 now come with Google-Tv installed as the OS.

The Plex app on it works great but is missing the download option to download content to local storage or to an attached USB stick. This would be a great addition to the app on Googl-tv devices especially where external storage can be attached.

Well - Google TV doesn’t just run on TVs. It also runs on projectors and dongles that people can move between devices and bring on vacations where there can be limited access to the Internet.
Take for example the new Nebula Capsule 3 Pocket Projector which is a portable projector with Google TV. Great for an outing … if you could just download your Plex movie on it.

Does anyone from Plex still read these? This is a simple request - Provide the Android TV app have the functionality of the standard Android app. In Sept '22 DaveBinM says “At this point in time” but provides no reason for this. There are a huge number of portable devices running Android TV with a cut down version of Plex. Why? What is the rationale for this? Or, how about allowing the basic Android App to be installed on Android TV devices.

One of the best things about the Amazon Fire TV is that it’s small and portable.

I’d love to be able to take it with me to the cabin, where there is no internet connection, or even use it in a hotel room while travelling, however for some reason Plex has disabled the ability to download episodes on theFire TV version, even for those of us paying for a Plex pass.

This makes zero sense, since it should be nearly there same software as any other Android device, and the Fire TV has as much memory as a phone.

I’d love to see the ability to download movies and television episodes for Fire TV!
