when i first load a TV series, all of the seasons and episodes load correctly. if i ever add to that series, say a new episode of a new season, the episode names never pull over. i name the file in this format: SeriesName-S00E01-EpisodeName. this naming convention is no different from the original load, which works, and any additional season/episode loads. included is a screenshot of how the episode gets named after being loaded, along with the media info showing that the naming is. i’ve also included the log that shows the file being added within the server. this has been happening for a few years and i’ve just dealt with it, but its getting annoying now. this is not unique to the server version and the player version does not matter as this is pre-player.
I take it that’s mostly because there’s no such show listed in any of the default agents used by Plex (same for searching with or without spaces in the name):
So you probably loaded the first episodes as “personal media show” or the first files had embedded metadata – while the newer files don’t have that.
Plex does not consider the episode name part in your file names to actually name the files (never has…)
this has happened for every TV show i have ever added. for example, How I Met Your Mother i added seasons 1-9 in one shot. when i started adding season 10 it did the same. either way, if it adds correctly as personal media the first time it loads, why would it change the way it adds the media the second+ time(s).
As for your original example I already gave you a possible cause… if the initial load of files contained embedded metadata but the new ones don’t, you’ll end up with new files that get no metadata (in the context of personal media shows).
I remember TheTVDb API had some issues earlier this year – this resulted in media being added to your server but couldn’t load the related metadata. Refreshing the metadata afterwards usually fixed this.
As for your specific question… the scanner log won’t help much as that only focuses on Plex “scanning” your directory and analyzing/comparing the files. Any issues with the metadata will be in other log files (depending not he agent used for that library or show).
The file name itself is no source for your episode metadata – the scanner is only processing the file name to tell Plex what show/season/episode to look for.
thank you for the replies. after looking over some of the sites’ pages, i understand what your talking about with the file name not actually providing naming to the episodes. my next question is, can i tell Plex to look at a file (txt or csv) to use as a reference point for local media assist?
You can tag the files themselves using another app. From what I’ve seen, Plex does not support external files containing metadata for your videos. All Plex might read from an .nfo file is the reference to a movie’s IMDb ID.
