Hi,
I have properly named my show files according to plex spec, ordered to the tvdb main order, and all episodes are picked up properly from there. Additional metadata from TMDB is available for most of the episodes, it picks up that E6 on TvDB is E9 on TMDB for example, and presents posters and text accordingly.
The problem is episodes that TMDB has decided belongs in a different season. They show the information from TvDB in my plex library, but posters and text from TMDB is nowhere to be found. Any of this make sense, and is there a workaround i can use without manually polishing my own entries locally?
Examples:
Working: TVDB Paw Patrol s7e17 Pups Save a Soapbox Derby id 7707276, TMDB s7e10 matched with title card
Not working: TvDB Paw Patrol S8e3 Pups Save a Sweet Mayor id 8307287, TMDB s7e40, not being matched on plex
Files used in example are part of double-episodes:
Season 7\Paw Patrol - S07E16-E17 - Pups Save the Big Bad Bird Crew + Pups Save a Soapbox Derby.mkv
Season 8\Paw Patrol - S08E03-E04 - Pups Save a Sweet Mayor + Pups Save a Magic Trick.mkv
Which “Episode Ordering” have you set in Plex for this show?
By default, the whole library uses TMDB. But that can be globally changed to TheTVDB.
Or for each series individually.
Which did you select precisely? There are 5 possible choices for this show.
Are your files actually one episode per file? Or do you have double episodes, like they were aired originally?
Ah, i got you.
i’ve selected TheTvDB (Aired) on the plex show settings.
My video files are of a nationalized source, in single and double episode format. the two files in question are both part of a two-episode file, but i think ive seen the same with a single-episode file. They had a different release order, but adhere to the same season ordering as TheTvDB. I have corrected that by renaming all the files manually, so they match TvDB (aired).
Files used in example:
Season 7\Paw Patrol - S07E16-E17 - Pups Save the Big Bad Bird Crew + Pups Save a Soapbox Derby.mkv
Season 8\Paw Patrol - S08E03-E04 - Pups Save a Sweet Mayor + Pups Save a Magic Trick.mkv
I really dont want to do that to test this out, since i’ve had to fix maybe 50 episodes altogether. If i had the option of local metadata override or save/restore on the metadata i have added i would, but thats not possible afaik. Are you not seeing the same behavior on your end?
Fix how?
The Plex Dance would only be an issue if you manually edited the episode metadata.
I don’t. Everything rectified itself, after I switched the Episode Ordering from the default TMDB to TheTVDB (Aired).
I used your exact file names as well.
Aah, see your confusion, and where i failed to be accurate. on your screenshot, soapbox derby got the title card from tmdb, and big bad bird crew did not. if you click on posters for the big bad bird crew, it probably doesnt show title cards from tmdb (mine didnt, i think). and that was the episode file i used as a working example, the season 8 one is the one that fails with plex failing to get any info from tmdb listed as s7e40 “over there”… TvDB has mostly screenshots with TMDB having title cards for the episodes, and i want the title cards all over. TvDB doesnt support adding pictures (locked threads) and doesnt do localized artwork anyways, so getting from both sources is a very handy feature
and yeah, i have manually added the title card artworks to all episodes missing it in my show, thats why i dont want to reset it if it can be helped. im not able to add them locally either, i dont think. multi-episode files doesnt support e1 and e2 .jpgs for the different parts it seems
But I do get metadata above episode 40. Each episode has a correct title and description.
Each episode has at least one still shot from the video selectable as title card, if you edit it. So you can avoid the title cards with the text.
Episode 3, sweet mayor, can your plex find this title image from TMDB when you click the edit and go to poster selection? Its on the correct episode on TMDB. Thats my issue.
I know the local media assets .jpg. with a single-episode file, it works for that episode.
with a multi-episode file, it works with both the episodes. if i want two different pictures, there is no way to do that
s01e01.mkv - s01e01.jpg OK
s01e02-e03.mkv - s01e02-e03.jpg OK – applies to both listed episodes
s01e04-e05.mkv - how to name separate file for s01e04.jpg episode listing, and s01e05.jpg?
the local media asset point is moot anyway, as they get individual pictures from tvdb / tmdb when its working as intended.
Yeah, i know, splitting has many advantages. Thats why i said the local art point is moot.
I still think something weird is going on in the case of S08E03 sweet humdinger not getting TMDB images from S07E40. It looks to me like the episodes that share a common season match up, but not if TMDB has them in a different season.
