In short:
Recently consolidated 5 instances of Plex into a single instance.
New server account, purchased PP, started inviting all users.
Reached a point where trying to grant library access throws code 422.
Removing invite and re-inviting works fine. Won’t allow past a certain number of users.
Long version:
I have a server with a few friends. Until now, we each had an instance of Plex Server running on the same physical machine. We recently decided to consolidate into a single instance through the use of a ‘generic’ account. A new account has been created, Plex Pass has been purchased, and a new server instance spun up. All going well so far.
We started to invite our users and the migration has been going well, but it now seems like we’ve hit a limit. Any attempt to grant library access is met with Error 422. I can remove a user invite and re-invite them without issue, but it seems like there’s an arbitrary limit on our account. The only bit that doesn’t make sense is that the ‘limit’ isn’t even a logical number (like 25, 50, 100, etc.). Why I’ve taken to the forums is that I’ve not been able to find concrete evidence that there is actually a user limit.
So… anyone had a similar experience? Did you resolve it? Did it resolve on its own? Is it a hard limit, or a dynamic limit? Help!
@wellzi does bring up a good point. The 100 user limit is not in the Plex documentation (that I could find, anyway). The limit on Plex Home users is documented.
I’ve seen the 100 user limit mentioned several times by Plex employees, which is how I know it exists. @wellzi found a reference before I could find one and update my post.
Also note that the limit is per account, not per server. It does not matter if you’ve one Plex server or multiple Plex servers. If they are all claimed by the same Plex account then there is a limit of 100 total people with whom you can share libraries.
@MarkV1320 to be honest, I thought ‘Plex Ninja’ was simply a title you could be promoted to by being active in the forums. It only occurred to me after my reply that FordGuy is a mod. With that said, I was still curious to understand the origin of such knowledge.
It is strange that one limit is documented, and another is not. It’s an entirely reasonable limit from both ‘typical’ use case and for business perspectives. My only frustration is that, had this been known upfront, we probably would have taken a different approach (or not changed at all).
You should leave those “business perspectives” completely out of this discussion.
Using Plex commercially in any way is a violation of its terms & conditions and can lead to termination of your account.
I think you may have misinterpreted my comment there. I meant Plex’s business, you know, given they are who set the user limit… There is no commercialisation going on here.
