Error - Conversion failed. Transcoder crashed or failed to start. PMS 1.10.1.4602

@sa2000

Exactly. With trace level all videos is loading forever.
Do I need to set it with settings number 1 or 2?

it would be an alternative to 1 and 2. A 3.
All would have server settings set to have both: verbose and debug enabled
On top of that we have 3 variations for the transcoder logging of debug / verbose / or trace
1 and 2 cover debug and verbose
3 would cover trace
I am surprised it hangs. Your server is 8 core I believe and I do not get a hang on my 4 core laptop

See if you can do the test with nothing else happening on the machine

Don’t even know if you have the same issue. The conversion failed transcoder crashed or failed to start is a generic general transcoder failure and could be due to many different reasons

If you care to provide server logs we can see if it is the same or another issue

@sa2000

I have a i7-6700K so I think it’s 4 cores and there is nothing else on the server running.
I’ve just changed it to option 1 as you suggested.

I will send logs for option 1 and 2 when the error will come back.

Thanks

The logs shows the PlexTranscoder.exe crashing immediately on launch in each case where transcoding was required. The crash code is the usual windows Access Violation crash C0000005

Dec 19, 2017 13:20:42.742 [12536] DEBUG - Jobs: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexTranscoder.exe' exit code for process 8500 is -1073741819

I have been looking into similar crashes on this forum topic http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/290006/getting-a-conversion-failed-transcoder-crashed-or-failed-to-start-up-error#latest for user wkupike2000

For such crashes one needs to replicate the problem and reproduce the error so it can be looked into by development

The problem in the linked forum thread resolved itself after an uninstall and re-install and ensuring no files were left behind in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server folders before the re-install

But if there is an issue where we may have corrupt installs then it needs to be looked into and identified

The steps that were carried out in trying to investigate the issue on the linked thread involved getting sample files that crashed and details on client app being used. In the end, it was not possible to replicate and I could not get the transcoder to crash. The next step was to add detailed logging and use SysInternals Procmon but the problem resolved itself after following these steps

Lets try a repair of the installation but lets do it by actually doing an uninstall and then install
So Control Panel / Add Remove Programs / Plex Media Server and select Uninstall
At the end of the uninstall reboot
and see what we have left in terms of folders / files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server
Assuming the uninstall completes without errors, it should be safe to delete
C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\ and just leaving parent directory C:\Program FIles (x86)\Plex
Now re-install Plex Media Server 1.11.0.4633
and launch it at the end of the install

We could skip all other investigations and just try this - but first take a copy of
C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server and zip the copy and make the zip available to me - I want to check if there is a corrupt install - may need to upload to dropbox etc and share a link

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rzhaeobzig50bs2/Plex%20Media%20Server.zip?dl=0 … My dropbox link @sa2000

Thank you.

The only discrepancy I see is that there is this file which should not be there
opencv_highgui2411.dll - is this something you added in the past?
Not sure if it is relevant to the issue - but we could tidy up the install by doing the following

There are also some residual plugins directories from previous versions but these are harmless

  1. Shut down plex media server
    Exit Plex Mrdia Server and ensure all Plex processes (with the exception of the Update Service) do not show up in Windows Task Manager

  2. Control Panel / Uninstall Plex Media Server
    Complete the uninstall

  3. Delete what is left - so delete folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server

  4. Re-install Plex Media Server 1.11.0.4633

and see if that makes a difference

If not, then lets try with detailed transcoder logging and get the logs and let me have a short clip that does crash the transcoder
With Regedit, locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
Right click on Plex Media Server and select New => String Value and name it TranscoderLogLevel and give it value trace
Exit Regedit

Enable server debug + verbose logging

Restart the server

Try to playback a short clip (if poss) that crashes the PlexTranscoder and then collect the logs and let me have the logs and clip (you can send me link by Private Message)

Remove the extra logging by delete registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\TranscoderLogLevel
and disabling verbose server logging

Hi @sa2000 ,

since few days, my computer was restarting by itself and got bluescreens Memory_Management.

So I ran memtest86 and found over 21000 errors. The faulty RAM has been identified. I removed it and request an RMA for it.

For now I have 8Gb ram until I receive the replacement ram.

Could it be the cause of my problem since few months? Could RAM problem cause that kind of problem?

Note that bluescreens happened only recently.

Regards

The cause is not known. The development team want to be able to reproduce the errors but this was not achieved using provided media files. The other option was to enable full development logging in the transcoder but in your case this stopped everything from working

I was thinking it was some timing problem

@sa2000 ,

Will it be a good move to switch from Windows 10 to Linux for my Plex Media Server? And if so, which distro do you recommend? CentOS? Ubuntu?

@sa2000

Error again happening at 21:38.

Just hope that it gets fixed… :frowning:

@sa2000 ,

I’ve installed Ubuntu MATE on another testing drive.

I’ve got no error so far. The problem seems to come from Windows.

I will install Ubuntu on the same drive as Windows was to see if it was not the drive itself.

Maybe it can help you.

Regards

Thank you for the feedback.
Still would be good if you can get the detailed trace level of transcoder together with verbose logging in the server if feasible

15 months down the track we have discovered that these specific transcoder errors are currently due to Malwarebytes Premium blocking some localhost Plex Transcoder requests.

I do not know if you were using Malwarebytes on Windows - and if not, it could have been some other similar security software

A Support Article has now been published for this problem

The specific errors this relates to is this error together with other errors
ERROR - [Transcoder] av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error
coupled by

Examples

ERROR - [Transcoder] [stream_segment,ssegment @ xxxxxxx] Failed to open segment list 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xxxxxxxxxxx/seglist
ERROR - [Transcoder] av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error
ERROR - [Transcoder] Error writing trailer of media-%05d.ts: Invalid argument

or

ERROR - [Transcoder] [dash @ 028ef3c0] Unable to open http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/manifest for writing
ERROR - [Transcoder] av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error

The support article is

Hi @sa2000

Yes indeed I was using Malware Bytes. :open_mouth:

Nice to hear the the problem was found.

I’ll keep Linux as I like it tho.

Thanks. :slight_smile:

You can thank @XenonMB who isolated the issue to that
