Error Message: There was a problem playing this item OR Not enough disk space

Hello,

recently I realised that I am no longer able to play some of my movies (supposedly MP4). I received the error message “There was a problem playing this item”. After some research I found out that in Settings I should point the Transcoder to a path on my HDD. So I created a new folder on my QNAP HDD called “temp” and added the path for Transocder as follows: /share/DataVol1/temp.

Now it seems as it starts playing (spinning circle) but then gives me the error message “Not enough disk space to convert this item”. My free Disk space on my QNAP HDD is about 3TB.

What is the reason for this? I never had problems playing any movies with either of these error messages. What can I do to resolve this?

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards.
Michael

Are write permissions set correctly?
Are the ownership and group set correctly on your new directory?

Dear jjrj1. Thank you for your answer.

I guess it has nothing to do with permissions.

I just found out that this problem occured on the iOS App (tested iPhone and iPad) and Web Browser (Safari). The File will be played correctly when using Amazon Fire TV and when using Chrome Browser.

If it had to do with permissions or ownership / group it would not work with any player, right? Sorry to give this information now, but I just found out behaviour is different when using different Browsers / Devices.

Maybe it is an issue related to the transcoder and it handles the files differently on different devices (Safari / iOS vs. Chrome / Fire TV)? So the Browser issue is not so bad for me as I can switch to Chrome easily…but not beeing able to play the File on iOS Devices bothers me…

Any ideas?

Many thanks and Best regards.
Michael

It is possible that on the Amazon Fire and the Chrome Browser are direct playing or direct streaming the media.
If that is the case, no transcoding would occur and no disk writes are necessary to play.
Have you verified that the Fire and Chrome are in fact transcoding??
I do not think the transcoder, other than codecs used, would operate any differently with respect to temp usage based on client.

If there is enough disk space on the volume, something must be telling the transcoder there is no disk space to use for temp.

Did you check perms, group, and ownership??
