I had a problem that some tv shows were not playing, not enough disk space. I read through the help sections and found the info on small ssd’s. I was guilty of this and followed the directions to set up a temp directory with >50 gb available. After setting up the temp dir I signed out, stopped the server and then started the server and signed back in. Now when I try to play them I get the message “There was a problem playing this item”. I went to the directory where the files are stored and the video played in VLC without a problem.
I have had this setup for about a year and a half and have never had a problem like this. I am running an Intel i5 with 8 gb of ram. I use Fedora 24 for the OS. I have separate hdds for tv shows and movies (2 each) and all of these have at least 500 gb space left.
This problem is only there for some of the shows not all. When I tried to play a movie I got this message “Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up.”
Any suggestions/info/help greatly appreciated. I am at a loss as what to do.
Okay, I’m feeling kinda like a idiot. The problem was initially that there wasn’t enough space on the small ssd. I read about that in the help section. I thought I had corrected that problem by setting up a temp directory for the transcoding on a larger drive. Still wasn’t working so I thought that wasn’t the answer. Stupid permissions!! I had set them to john:users instead of plex:users. And I have been using Linux for a while and I screwed that up. I fixed that and now everything is working as it should. It finally dawned on me as I was going through the set up to make sure I had checked everything.
So, have a good laugh on me, I just did. Thanks for your help,
