Exactly which software is mandatory for HDHomeRun Prime & Plex DVR?

I currently am running Plex Media Server on a Debian box running OpenMediaVault. The main client is a Raspberry Pi running Plex for Kodi. My current DVR is a TiVo.

Will be getting an HDHomeRun Prime in addition to the current TiVo for reasons I’d rather not explain (too windy). I will either split the existing cable coax between the TiVo and HDHomeRun or run in a separate coax, depending on signal strength.

I’m wondering if it’s possible to get by with just the HDHomeRun software that installs on Linux (assuming Debian is supported of course). The idea is to have Plex handle recording from the HDHomeRun Prime.

My hope is I won’t need to involve a Windows machine running the HDHomeRun Windows App. In an all-Linux solution I’ll have local hard drive storage for recorded programs. If Windows is in the mix then storage will be through Samba, not my first choice.

Is this reasonable or do I have to add a NUC running Windows 10 to support the HDHomeRun Windows App into the mix? I’d rather not run the NUC 24/7, especially when I have a powerful Debian box dedicated to PMS already with plenty of cycles to spare.

Anyone have experience with a similar setup?

Thanks!
Mark M

Although it would be helpful to have a Windows PC (not sure if Silicon Dust supports other platforms or not) for the initial setup of your HDHomeRun to validate up to date firmware, it is not necessary to run their software in addition to Plex.

I was wondering what the purpose of the HDHomeRun software was; I gather from your reply it’s only needed for initial setup and firmware updates. That’s encouraging!

That’s all I ever use it for.

Same boat. PMS on headless Debian, but I used Windows to do the initial setup of my HDHomeRun Extends. The hdhomerun-config package is available via the default repos, and it can be utilized to manually tune or restart an HDHR or update the firmware, but it really is easiest to perform the initial setup on Windows. As of firmware 20170815, you can perform firmware updates via the web interface without needing to obtain and flash the firmware manually, so I rarely interact with them from Windows anymore except to use the handy hdhomerun_config_gui utility to evaluate signal quality and strength when troubleshooting.

Excellent! The Prime is arriving today, got the M-Card, can’t wait to start playing around!
