Excessive Buffering While Streaming on Local Network

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2029
Player Version#:

My plex server is demonstrating two symptoms frequently when streaming. The first symptom is it will freeze for 20-30 seconds and then resume playing. The second symptom is that it will freeze for around 45-60 seconds and then will continue to play, but without sound. I have reviewed all the support articles I can find regarding troubleshooting this issue, and my system always comes out better than needed for successful streaming. Any guidance in resolving the issue would be greatly appreciated!

My server is running on a Dell XPS 8930 with 32 GB RAM, 6 core Intel i7-8086K 4GHz CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB graphics card, running Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit.

My media is stored on a Drobo 5C connected via USB 3.0.

My server and devices are all wireless 5G to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

I get the same behavior on several different players including a Vizio D55-F2 smart tv, Roku app, and iOS app.

Again, any guidance in troubleshooting and resolving this streaming issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Adam

Make sure you are using software transcoding. I’d also be suspect of WiFi. Have you tested with a wire if possible to the server?

I would also reboot the router if you haven’t already. Depending on how long it’s been booted up, it might be hanging up on certain processes. I used to have a router that required weekly reboots…

Thanks for the advice. Recently the issue has gotten much worse such that videos don’t even attempt to play. I rebooted both the router and the server. Additionally, I uninstalled everything not related to my media library on the server. It appears to have improved a little and I can now get through a movie with only 3 or 4 brief pauses for buffering, but then the plex media server service has been crashing logging this event in the application log:

Any ideas on how to resolve? Searching has not provided many options.
