Excessive data usage by plexamp

Server Version#:10.24.0.2257
Player Version#:4.11.2
I am experiencing excessive data usage. This has been an ongoing issue since June/July.

This morning the app consumed 565mb of data in under 10 minutes (approximately 3-4 songs were played). No songs were skipped or tracked.

I have the following setting in the players app:
Cellular caching: next song only
Cellular quality: 64kbps

If I preload the cache before leaving my local network then these data usage issues do not arrive. It appears it may be an issue with transcoding as a significant portion of my library is FLAC files.

Does anyone have any insight into what may be causing this or how to mitigate it? I love Plex and plexamp but this is really painful given I have a limited mobile data plan and I am not always able to clear and preload the cache.

Elan will want to see your logs, see if you can grab them.

Thanks for the heads up! Posting them below.

@elan Here are all the logs I could pull from plexamp.

Plexamp.1.log is from today and starts from when I started streaming via android auto. this was my first android based activity with plexamp today.

Plexamp.2.log covers my activity from yesterday but if I recall correctly I had preloaded the cache before heading out. I think I see that in this file at around 17:50

Sorry for the double threads going on this. If the moderators would like to consolidate these somehow please go ahead and do so.

Just a small update on this. I noticed that my Plex server had some configuration issues and was running through the relay resulting in indirect playback.

I got excited as I thought that may have been what is causing the data usage issues I’m seeing. Fixed that up and went for a drive this morning. Preloaded the cache with 2.23gb of music and went for a 30min drive. At the end of that drive I see I’ve still consumed 230mb of mobile data. This may be within normal usage but I’m still concerned it has consumed this much data in such a short period of time.

I’ve attached this mornings logs in case anyone would like to take a look at them.

Could the indirect connection have caused the clearly excessive data usage I posted about (and supplied logs for) in my previous comment?

@elan would you rather logs get uploaded as raw files or are the zip files I’m uploading ok for you to work with?

Pretty sure this will be fixed in the next release.

That’s great news! I’ll keep an eye out for it and be sure to test. Thanks

Hi everyone,

I’m having the same issue. I have FLAC files on my server, and want them to convert to MP3s at 320k when I am streaming remotely (ie not on wifi).

No matter what settings I use in plexamp, plex media server etc it never transcdes. Files are only ever played at full quality, which uses a huge amount of my mobile data.

Any idea when the next version of plex media server will be released?

The bug was fixed in the latest release of Plexamp. If you’re having trouble, reproduce and then post Plexamp logs here.
