Plexamp buffering issue on cellular (remote)

Server Version#: 1.21 (Shield TV pro)
Player Version#: 3.3.1 (Plexamp iOS)
Hello,
Sorry, I post a lot ^^’ I’m a new user of Plex (migration from video and audio station from Synology).
I’m so in love with Plex (beautiful, reliable, easy…)
And… as a new user, I find bugs :-p

Another with Plexamp, steps to reproduce:

  • on cellular mode
  • no cache for the songs which are played
  • transcode from Flac to Opus 128

In this case, if I switch to the next songs, it will take several seconds to start the song (sometimes Plexamp refuse and I have to play another song). It seems to be a buffering issue…
Because, if I use Plex instead of Plexamp, there is no issue at all! I can switch without any lag or buffering issue (with the same cellular network at the same place, of course)

Do you also transcode the music on the regular Plex client? If not, then maybe the transcode is to blame somehow.

Also, do you allow PlexAmp to play for say 20 seconds after you start the first song? So it can build a bit of a buffer I mean.

Also, have you checked out the downloads feature? You wouldn’t have to transcode and still not use any data. Win win, no?

Yes, when I did the test, the configuration was the same : cellular, cache of apps cleared, transcode needed

I skip rapidly the songs. Because I don’t like the next song for example.
With Plex, no issue, buffer and transcode are very quick. Plexamp was totally lost…
(I’ve tested with Prism, similar to Plex, no issue)

Yes but it’s not really the question. I want to have my entire library accessible and skip tracks I don’t like. Similar to other music app, in fact

Then I don’t know. The only thing I suspect however (because it has happened to me before), is that even if you set the normal Plex client to transcoding, it doesn’t actually do so. I have never used Prism, so i can’t comment on that, but if I were you I would double check that both the normal Plex Client and Prism actually causes a transcode.

If they do not, then it could be that the Shield Pro can’t transcode as fast as you would expect a FLAC to Opus. My experience (not with Shield, but with a lowish spec stationary) is that transcoding music, while almost instant, still takes a good few seconds to fully transcode a track. It could be that you skip so fast that it just can’t keep up.

But that’s all speculation - I’m just going by own experiences. Maybe it’s not useful.

It’s mysterious because under the hood, Plex and Plexamp both use the same player engine.

If it’s taking long to start/switch, that generally implies you’re not getting the bandwidth you need.

If you you posted the plexamp logs during a slow startup, we could at least see what network connection it was using, and corresponding logs from the server might help as well (especially if we had both sets from Plex and Plexamp for the same track).
