Exclamation mark on my Synology NAS, seems I need Secure Connection

I installed Plex yesterday and everything seemed to work pretty good. Today when I login to the web UI it shows an exclamation mark after the NAS name. When clicking on that it says something about me needing to get a Preferred Secure Connection.

But when following the instructions, it doesn’t seem to work. For instance, there is no server setting to be found in the web UI or the Synology UI.

Also, I don’t have that upper row where it says Web, Server, User, Devices. See pic below.

Lastly, if that is any help, what I wanted to do is to create another Library.

I successfully created a new library. But still I need to know if Secured Connection is something I need. I am novice when it comes to network problems.

where does it show the exclamation?

Is it in the list of servers (left panel) and is it yellow?

Do you have another with the same name which isn’t yellow?

Yes, it is in orange/yellow and in servers in the left panel. And it’s not specific folders, when I check the NAS, it’s orange too. This is from the webinterface. From my NAS interface I don’t have this problem. But it would be nice to locate the problem and make me use the web UI.

I hate networks. I’ve been using computers for four decades and still these problems arise each time there is something to do with servers.

When I push the button with the exclamation mark it shows something like this:
“app.plex.tv cannot connect to “server name” securely
The “Secure Connections” setting may be set to disabled, or you may need to adjust some settings in your network. You can learn more about secure connections here.”

But the info on that page wasn’t helpful for me. It was this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

I’m using a Google Wifi network at home, if that is any help.

When you see that, the server id on your local machine doesn’t.

I would like you to do the following:

  1. Uninstall the package from Package Center
    – Signout Only (KEEP data) radio button

  2. Install the same again
    – Use “New or Lost” servers (Plex Claim Token method)
    – Click ‘Get Claim Token’ hyperlink
    – COPY the token from the browser tab which opens
    – Within 4 minutes, return to the installation tab and PASTE the token in the box on the form
    – Click NEXT NEXT DONE
    – Allow it to install (about 20 extra seconds)

  3. When complete, if all normal, Your Plex Username and email will show in the results box.

  4. Close your open Plex browser tabs and then open new.

  5. Open the server 1 time by LAN IP address and all will be well.

Followed all steps but the last one. Didn’t understand that one. Still, you explained most steps clearly, and it was easy to follow. Thanks!

But even though every step worked smoothly, and I successfully reinstalled the Plex app on my NAS, the problem, unfortunately, remains.

  1. Stop PMS

  2. Open FileStation

  3. Navigate PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server

  4. Right-Click ‘Logs’ → ‘Compress to Logs.zip’

  5. When that completes, Download ‘Logs.zip’ to your computer then upload it here with your next reply. I will see what’s wrong.

Ok, just to see if we are on the same page and trying to solve the same problem:

Going to Plex using the IP address has worked all the time. It is the same as going through Plex via the NAS app, right? That’s not the problem.

The problem I am having is visiting Plex through the web interface. Is that the problem we are trying to solve? I hope I haven’t made you spend time in vain.

First order of business was to confirm the NAS is on your account.

Yes, I wanted you to use the same LAN IP (just as you do when accessing DSM) except use the Plex URL http://IP.addr.of.Diskstation:32400/web

Now, if you can’t get it from outside, I can already see why. (Plex.tv has your server as ‘Not Published’ – aka. no access from outside)

  1. Remote Access isn’t active / enabled
    -or-
  2. Relay isn’t enabled
    -OR-
  3. Network connection to internet from Syno → Internet problem.

You did get to see your username when you ‘claimed’ it with the installer
-OR-
did it come up blank ?

If your name and email showed – It’s talking to the internet and therefore your Plex config.

If your name and email did NOT show – You have a network configuration error with the Syno itself not getting out to the internet (wrong gateway ?)

There’s a setting in the Plex NAS app called “Remote Access” and I can set it to “Allow”. It seems that was the problem. I wasn’t aware that it should be on to allow me to use the web UI. Thanks!

There’s a regression in the current beta.

Now that it’s been enabled once, you can turn it off.

IF

If it still fails, then we have a bigger problem to resolve and I’ll get on that (with your logfiles) at that time.

Not sure what you mean by regression here, but I turned remote access off now, and now the web access is gone again. I tried on, it worked again. So what steps do you propose now? I’m using a Google Wifi, a Macbook with a firewall called Little Snitch (but I don’t see it block anything here). The Mac firewall is always off. I’m using NextDNS to help with security. Not sure if any of that info was of any help, but thought you should know.

If you turn off RemoteAccess and it stops working,

then you must have DNS Rebinding protection enabled.

Can you create an entrry to allow Private Domain ‘*.plex.direct’ ?

Doing so will stop DNS Rebinding protection from firing and the blocked loopback in your modem/router/security software

PMS overlays domain ‘plex.direct’ to be on top of your LAN IP addresses.
DNS Rebinding Protection blocks that.

If your security is too tight, without the exception, you see what you see.

I have this in PfSense. DNS Resolver config

The next time I logged in through the webinterface it worked, without me changing anything else. So perhaps it was just a case of the classic “reboot your computer” fix.

However, I’m no friend of networks, so I am sure problems will arise at some time again. So I will save your advise for a rainy day. Thanks!
