ExpressVPNRouter & Plex Media Player

Hi everyone. Wondering if you could help me out with this one…

I have recently updated my router (Asus RT AC87) and have installed the ExpressVPN Router firmware onto the device. Connected to my router via ethernet is my Synology NAS running PMS. Only one device in my house has to be connected to the VPN so I go into the ExpressVPN firmware settings and bypass all other devices from the VPN.

Now when I go to watch Plex on my AppleTV, iPhone or iMac it won’t connect to the server, however it works fine on my iPad! Really not sure what is going on. If it didn’t work on anything that I would have put it down as a failed experiment, however as it works on my iPad its got me really confused.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ive been struggling with this as well. Though my situation was a little more complex… I live in an RV Park with good WiFi, but I have no access to the modem. My ExpressVPN Router is a Linksys WRT1200AC dedicated to connecting to the public WiFi single connection and securing a VPN tunnel (WWAN) and providing DHCP to my LAN, while my WRT1900AC is a glorified switch and access point for my LAN.

ExpressVPN Router has the option to manage devices and select MediaStreamer which i had logically chosen for my Plex Server, I set up manual port forwarding, as well as installed UPnP/NAT-PnP services… (might put some holes in your firewall if you dont know what youre doing) Not 100% sure if this was necessary but I like having UPnP features…

How to enable UPNP on OpenWRT
Log in as root via SSH.
opkg update
opkg install miniupnpd luci-app-upnp
/etc/init.d/miniupnpd enable
/etc/init.d/miniupnpd start
/etc/init.d/firewall restart

, but PMS didn’t see the correct external IP of my VPN it instead it saw the private IP assigned by my RV park… Double NAT bah! DONT use ExpVPN’s MediaStreamer option under device management for Plex! select VPN and With VPN turned on, a static IP assignment for your PMS it should now see your external VPN IP address and work properly… its really late/early so if some or all of this doesn’t make sense ask me questions Ill be happy to reply… I actually got it working by writing this for you, so thanks to you LOL!
