Hey all,
I recently moved my PMS from my office computer to my Shield. I have the 16GB version so I bought a Seagate Extension drive (this one) for media storage.
Something has been failing with this setup because every 8-12 hours or so, the drive loses connection to the Shield. In the storage settings for the Shield, it recognizes the drive, but says 0TB. If I restart the Shield, the drive reconnects and says 1.8TB. I can navigate to the drive from my computer and while I have full access to the Shield’s internal storage, the external drive folder states, “This folder is empty.”
I tried reformatting the drive to exFAT, but that didn’t help. Somewhere in the forums I got the suggestion to uninstall ES File Explorer. Is that a legitimate suggestion? I guess I’ll try that now and report back.
Uninstalling ES File Explorer should be done regardless even though it has nothing to do with this bug (use X-plore File Manager). I’m not sure if this is a “known” bug but I constantly have this problem as well, though I can generally go a few days before it shows as having 0TB. It has been reported to NVIDIA.
Funny… Before even seeing this thread I uninstalled ES file explorer (what on Earth happened to that app?).
Then I did a factory reset… And now Plex can’t find my tuner! I’ve tried all sorts of resets and plugging and unplugging and it’s just gone.
Prior to doing this, I was having issues with recordings stopping randomly. Seems like it might have been due to a badly positioned antenna. Now I have good reception and no way to record!
After you did a factory reset, Plex Server was reset to the shipping version. Did you use a web browser and visit the Google play store and force an update to the Shield TV? If it’s not seeing the tuner I wager the Plex Server version is old and needs to be updated.
I suspect the HDD showing 0TB is nothing to do with Plex but more likely an issue with Shield Experience V5.2. I have had the same issue with a USB3 HDD drive since updating to 5.2. Interestingly the HDD stays online for several days when plugged in via a cheap USB2 hub but eventually it still drops. Plugged directly into the Shield TV it drops within a day. This didn’t happen with SE V5.1. Blueskies, Paul
What is your hard drive make and model? (Edit, sorry just read your post again and saw that you already provided this info).
I have a WD My Book 6TB with exFAT partition. I saw this issue only 3 times over a 8 months period.
Does your hard drive have an auto sleep mode timer? If yes, can you disable it for a test. My guess is, I could be wrong though, that some hard drives take a very long time to spin up. Maybe, if the hard drive takes too much time, the Shield thinks it’s not accessible.
Since it seems to occurs within 12 hours from your side, it’s kind of easy to test this theory by disabling the auto sleep mode timer on the hard drive.

I’ll try that tonight. Thanks for the idea. Seems plausible.
Paul- I think you’re right. I don’t think it’s Plex’s fault. I have a similar thread going on at the Shield forums. So far no luck over there.
Kegobeer- I did grab the latest update for PMS on the Shield.
Same here. Externally mounted HDD that worked flawlessly with other devices always ends up at 0TB when plugged into the Shield. It’s preventing me from using me for DVR recordings. I’m using a Seagate Backup Plus 2TB.
My theory is that this is related to the fact that Android doesn’t really support externally mounted volumes and hasn’t for QUITE some time. Google killed off traditional SD card support (the mobile equivalent) ages ago and they still haven’t properly added that back into the code. Nvidia seems to be trying to bridge the gap with enabling the Shield to utilize externally mounted volumes, but I fear this is bigger than Nvidia. I’ve moved on to just mapping to my NAS. Android supports that via third party apps capable of establishing SMB connections just fine and has for as long as I can remember.
Your theory seems reasonable. It’s only happened once after the factory reset so I’m going to push my luck. I think i’ll try disabling the sleep timer. If it happens again, I’ll unplug it from the Shield and plug it into my router as a network share. I’ll report back!
It just happened yesterday evening to me. It happened during a dvr recording. So pretty much invalidate my sleep timer theory!
For putting the hard drive on your router, indeed sound like a good idea since firmware 5.2 fixes issues regarding network mounts. Since I have a little spare drive, I tried it. Setting up my router was quick and easy. In few seconds, I was able to see the network share on my Pc. However, not the same story on the Shield. The network share was not detected automatically by the Shield. So I try to mount it manually. I was not able to mount it. The Shield doesn’t detect the share. I changed different settings on the router, nothing has worked. Just to make sure the network share was working correctly, I set it up into Kodi file manager on the Shield. In few click, the share was mounted and working inside Kodi.
So I have no idea why the Shield doesn’t detect the share.
I like the Shield but storage on it is not its strength.
Ugh! I’m still having the same problem! I tried moving the drive to my router, but wouldn’t ya know, my particular external drive isn’t supported with Netgear’s proprietary Readyshare technology. So then I moved the drive to my office computer, which is on 24/7, and the drive unmounted after less than a day. I moved it back to the Shield and it became unavailable less than 12 hours later. I’m so sick of this!! Do you think it would make a difference if I ‘adopted’ the drive to the shield?
As you are using a portable non (self) powered drive, suggest that you attach it to a powered hub and then attach hub to shield. That solved some disconnects for me.

ES File Explorer uninstalled. Woke up this morning, drive unmounted.
It is NTFS - anyone resolve this issue changing it to exFat?
No, exFAT won’t fix that. I’ve been dealing and trying to find a fix for this issue for the last year. Since to be worst when there are a lot of write activities. I was so tired of this that a month ago, I gave up. There was a WD my cloud personal on sale at a local retailler. I bought it and took the hard drive connected on the Shield and connected on this little NAS. I did not have a single issue since then. No more fail recording with “could not move media to destination”, no more reboot cause the media are not available in plex libraries.

This is the route I will probably take. Good to hear NAS is working for you. Any issues using the Shield as a server with the media on NAS? My only concern is direct play on a TV on the network with the server on the shield and the media on a NAS drive - stuttering, playback issues.
No, there is no issue. My nas and my shield are hard wired on a gigbit switch. Almost all my media are 1080p x265. I don’t have 4k content though. The read throughput on my NAS is arround 100 MB/s, so a little bit over 800 mbps. I record sometime 2 OTA streams at once. No problem there also.
