I have question about extra’s in the Plex system. For reference, I know about page support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220677, but this goes away from that in a fashion.
Trying to make things as simple as possible on my Plex installation, I have my storage setup with following way:
Videos
Abbott and Costello
Alfred Hitchcock
Etc, Etc, Etc.
Only those actors or producers that have a large group of films get a separate folder.
Now, I have a folder in here called Finished, which is where I place most of my movies into. I have just finished ripping some videos from my disc and have extra’s with them, such as deleted scene’s and such.
I really do not want to have to start setting up my file structure like it shows on that above mentioned page.
Example:
-Videos
-Finished
-Movie Name (folder)
-Movie File
-Extra, etc.
Would it be possible to do it this way and still have it register correctly in Plex
-Videos (Folder)
-Finished (Folder)
-Movie Name (File)
-Movie Name (file)-extra_type.ext
Will that work? Will it shows up in Plex properly? I really do not want to have to go in and make a separate folder for each movie, but I can it need be. I just like keeping all my files in one location.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks
Is there anyone that has an idea on this. I really don’t want to have to go in a create new folders for all of my movies and such.
Sorry but this will not work the way you want. When Plex sees -extra_type, it uses the first part of the filename as the title for that extra. This is automatically attributed to the movie that is in the same folder. If you have more than 1 movie, it won’t be able to attribute that extra file to any movie. You need the Move Name (folder).
Ok, so if I decided to do this, then I will need to set my server up with each movie in their own folder line. I will have to see if I really want to do that. I have over 1500+ movies, so, LOL, it might not be worth it in the long run for me, at least.
There are many tools that can help rename your movie and even create the individual folders. I don’t know what OS you run, but for Windows I recommend a program called FileBot.
I have used FileBot in the past, I also use a program called Rename that, in some cases, does any every better job than FileBot and has a few other options to choose from. 99% of my movies are located on a 6TB NAS unit, but I was really not wanting to change the setup. It’s ok, I may change all that over the next week or so while I’m off from work (work at a school district), as I take my Plex server down for a few hours to add some hard drives to the physical server itself. Trying some experiments with server based storage vs the NAS holding the files, though I will most likely continue to hold most of my movies on the NAS.
I just didn’t want to have to take the time to change that information for 1500+ movies, but then again, if I want some of the extra items, I will have to do that. So I guess I will take the plunge, lol. Thanks
What, really, is the likelihood that you’ll have Extras for every movie?
I do NOT nest all my Movies in Folders.
I love Extras. I grab/rip/save them when ever I can. I estimate 4% of my movies have Extras. If I happen to upgrade a Movie and that new Movie has Extras it’s an easy matter to Plex Dance® (a necessary community invented work around you will no doubt learn a lot about soon) the new Movie and it’s folder with all the Extras at that time.
