Extremely choppy playback on Synology

Synology: DS918+
Server Version#: 1.19.3.2793 (but problem was also present on previous version)
Player Version#: 1.10.0.1208 Plex for Windows (but problem is also on iPad)

A couple of days ago I noticed that some of my movies and TV series we’re unplayable. Playback is so choppy it is useless. And by choppy I mean that it shows me 2 seconds of movie and then pauses for 2-3 seconds before giving me another 2 seconds of movie… and so on.

Looking and the network and server load in Plex show something odd (I think).

Playing a movie that works will give me a network spike in the beginning and then many smaller bumps along the way. This can be seen above at time 1:30m and about 30 seconds forward.

Playing a movie that does not work gives me a continuous massive load on the network. As can be seen from about 55 seconds on the above.

Now here is something more “funny”. If I pause the playback it will continue to use the network and the system resources of the Synology.

This can be seen in the above. This is a graph showing a movie that has been paused for more than 2 minutes. It will even “drain” the resources so much it will stop displaying the CPU and system load on the Synology all together. And it’s not even playing anything  :grimacing:

If I disable “Secure connections” I can get the movie to play fine. But network and CPU graphs still look like the above.

If I play the movies directly through say Windows Media Player they work just fine.
Am I missing something here or what could be wrong?

Looking at other threads about this you’ll probably want logs… so here you go

Yes I did SAVE… and I double checked. Debug level is set to “Enabled” and NOT “Verbose”.
But just for the fun of it - here is a third set of logs :slightly_smiling_face:
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-05-17_17-24-20.zip (3.2 MB)

@JanSkinnerup

You’re changing the setting in the wrong location.

You changed it for Plex Web.

You need to change the setting for the Plex Server, in Settings -> General. Click Show Advanced if necessary. See screenshot below.

After you change the setting, re-create the problem so the logs can capture the necessary info.

Then pull & post the zip file.

FYI, if you want to verify, look at Plex Media Server.log inside the zip file. If verbose is enabled, about 85% of the lines will contain “VERBOSE” after the timestamp. The log files are a fixed size and wrap from .log -> .1.log -> … -> .5.log -> bit bucket. With verbose enabled the files wrap very quickly and meaningful information is often pushed out. Also, with ~85% unnecessary information, it makes it very hard to search for meaningful lines (too much chaff, not enough wheat).

@FordGuy61 Ah… I see… whadda ya know… thanks for the heads up!

Ok, so I’ve changed the setting in the right place and here are new logs. Looking at the specified log as you mentioned shows me only DEBUG after I made the change :slightly_smiling_face:
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-05-17_21-31-22.zip (3.2 MB)

I also see a lot of “connection reset by peer” lines…

Following. I have a similar issue. It only happens with older SD content.

This is not older or SD content with me :slightly_smiling_face:

Problem is still there. Ran into a few other files tonight with the same problem.

Looking at the log I see a lot of these:
Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 753664 bytes: 104 - Connection reset by peer.

Again - playing through Windows Media player is no problem.

Which thread should we be in?

Yes - I see there are more threads about this issue now :slightly_smiling_face:

In another thread you mentioned link aggregation. Yes - I have that on my Synology. It’s patched into a Ubiquiti 48 port PoE switch with appropriate link aggregation on the two ports connected to the Synology. I don’t see any errors either on the Synology or the UBNT setup.

I’ve attached debug logs.

Fast & Furious 6 = problem
Fast & Furious 5 = no problem

I’ve also noticed that turning off “Secure connections” and restarting the Plex player in Windows will let me play the movie. I don’t know if that makes sense… but it works:

Secure connection required = problem
Secure connection preferred = problem
Secure connection disabled = no problem
(These different tests are not in the logs).

What is the player? The windows app ? It says “Standalone”.

What if you play from a browser?

Even further down…

This is entirely network/player end. It’s dropping/forcing closed the TCP/IP connection.

The player is Plex for Windows…

OK, did some further testing…

iOS on iPhone from remote network = NO problem (HW transcoding).
iOS on iPhone on local network wi-fi = NO problem (direct play).
iOS on iPad on local network wi-fi = NO problem (direct play).
tvOS on Apple TV 4k on local network (wired) = NO Problem (direct play)
Plex for Windows on PC on local network (wired) = Problem (direct play).
Chrome browser on Windows PC on local network (wired) = NO problem (direct play).
Yes… same PC

Hopefully some of this is helpful because it makes no sense to me

EDIT #1: Changed iPad from “problem” to “NO problem” after update of app in app store :slightly_smiling_face:
EDIT #2: Changed AppleTV from “problem” to “NO problem” after update of app in app store

Sounds like none of this is a Synology problem.

Moving to Windows player.

So many people are complaining about stuttering on Plex for Windows for about 1 month now, and they have not done anything about it. Look at the other topics in the Plex Players section.

I don’t know about the “not doing anything about it”.

I CAN however verify that it is still a problem even though there has been a couple of updates to the Plex for Windows app within the past few weeks
