I am having a lot of trouble streaming any of my content outside of my home network. As long as I’m on my network, everything works great.
When I try to stream remotely, most of the time media will just not play at all. It looks like it’s loading, but just sits loading forever and never plays. Sometimes, if I set the remote streaming quality on the lowest (320 kpbs), it will briefly play with a lot of stopping to buffer and eventually just freeze. I’ve tried streaming remotely on an iPhone, iPad, Roku Stick, Roku 1, Plex.TV, all with the same result. I’ve tried on multiple high speed wifi networks and cellular LTE. My home network speeds on Speedtest.net are 96.65Mpbs down / 10.97Mbps up. Plex Media Center is on my home Windows 7 PC.
I've been trying to fix this for weeks but have been unable to. I've done tons of search, reinstalled plex a couple of times, reset my home network, adjusted settings on all my Plex apps, but I just can't figure it out.
I’ve attached the most recent logs as well. If there’s any other information I can provide, please let me now. I’d really love to get this fixed! Thanks for any help.
I am setting the streaming quality on each of the devices I am trying to watch the content on.
For example - I am away from home right now but on a wifi network getting 18mpbs down / 13mbps up on my iPhone. I set the remote wifi streaming quality on the iPhone app at the lowest setting and try to play media. It just loads a frame like it is trying to play, but just get stuck loading. The media doesn't actually play. Sometimes it will play for a few seconds, but eventually just get stuck loading.
This happens with all of the devices I've tried on different networks.
I’ve also experienced this same issue. I’m trying to host content from my home PC and access it from my iPad on the road or Apple TV at my summer home. Everything seems to work fine at home, but remote access is horribly slow. I can sync certain files to my iPad, but even that takes an extremely long time if I’m trying to do it from a hotel, and syncing isn’t an option for plex on the Apple TV4, right?
I hear the upload speed from my home network is the real bottleneck, which is discouraging. No matter how fast my hardware is or how I have my network configured, I’ll never get the streaming quality/speed ratio that you’d find with something like Netflix, where that content is being pulled from a nearby server with dedicated bandwidth… not from a home PC with dismal 10 Mb/s upload speed.
If that is true, then I’m afraid my only option for the summer home is to try and find a way to sync the content from my home to the summer house. Maybe a NAS running plex or a Popcorn Hour, but I don’t even think the popcorn hour will download via plex. i think you’d have to manually fill the hard drive. perhaps I can manage that remotely, but then I’d have to maintain two different plex databases… ugh… any ideas?
I had issues with remote play, turns out it was the " secure connections" that was slowing it down for me, turned those off server wide and its back to fast direct play
If youre having streaming issues outside of your home network @FutureSC, the first thing you should do is run a local internet speed test and see what your upload speeds look like. Now this speed test is a base because depending on your ISP you might not have a consistent upload speed which is contributing to the buffering issues. The ping is also important because if the ping time is big, the communication between the servers relaying the data and your server will be delayed and that will also affect stable streaming. Let me know what you upload speeds are looking like or throw a snapshot of at least 2 speed test runs back to back.
