Hi all, just having trouble streaming at any quality above 720p 2mbps, i have all i can see regarding quality at maximum in regards to streaming outside my network, my server has a lifetime subscription pass as well so not that. I have it saying remote access not available at times but as long as my pc is on i can stream remotely so maybe a bug ? I have recently moved my pc into a new case and this has affected my ability to stream, it was working before i moved my pc. Please i am losing my mind, having 1080p/ 4k files but streaming in a max of 720p is very frustrating. Thank you for any help in advance.
Does streaming inside your network play things ok?
Have you set a static ip and port forwarded your server in the router?
It sounds like you may be using UPnP which can have the kind of unreliability you’re describing

One thing to check, is whether you have fixed the default for remote viewing. By default, all clients restrict THEMSELVES to no more than 2MBps if your connection is considered “remote” to the server. Any more-complex-than-usual network might trigger the remote, but all outside-the-home connections trigger this too. Check your player’s setting to make sure your “remote quality” is set to “Maximum”.
If this is not the case, then it’s quite possible you do not have remote access working, and Plex is using the last-ditch-effort “relay” system, where it piggybacks on your server’s connection to the official Plex servers (for account authentication only) to serve the video. This traffic goes through Plex’s own servers, so to keep people from abusing it they restrict traffic to ~2MBps, which ends up being 720p most of the time.
For both of the above issues, check your server dashboard (on a browser, click the wrench icon and click dashboard) while watching a video to see if there is a (!) next to the the device square as seen here:

If the latter, then JaysPlex7 has already gotten started troubleshooting the issue.
If you do not see the (!), then you are not using the relay, and it is likely the first thing I mentioned. You see this if it says “720p (H264) - Transcode” instead of “Direct Play” under the video section.
(FYI, the lack of a Plex Pass does not block remote viewing, nor does it restrict your video streaming speed)
