I recently setup a Plex Server for the first time. I have the Plex pass. I have configured my Plex Server with all the necessary settings for streaming High Quality media. My co-worker who has Plex for years now assisted with the setup. We have the exact same Server settings for streaming. My upload speed on my network is 40Mbps. He has roughly ~20 Mbps. He is able to offer his handful of users (at different times obviously), 1080p streams between 4Mbps-6Mbps depending on the media. My streams are constantly 720p 2 Mbps no matter what. These are remote streams. I have optimized all of my Media to play at high quality at 6Mbps. All my settings are configured appropriately. I have tried remotely on a smart tv, roku, computer, and mobile phone. Am I missing something within my router? I have run speed tests on my internet. The lowest it goes during busy hours is roughly 28 Mbps upload. The videos NEVER buffer, never hang, instantly stream. I have selected the optimized video when going to play. I have created a secondary user account and configured those streaming settings on that account as well to play media at the highest quality. When streaming, I select the quality, and even when I select the optimized version, it shows its playing the 1080P version, but the video is more 720p. When I looked at my Plex Dashboard, it shows the current media playing is only streaming at 720p when I have the optimized 1080p version selected on the streaming device. Am I missing something major? My co-worker has no idea what could be going on. Any help is appreciated! This is my first time posting so I may need assistance with pulling logs. I can take screenshots of my settings as well. Thanks!
Sounds like your setup might be limited to an indirect/relayed connection.
This could be a restriction due to your internet connection or a bad remote access configuration. You should be able to confirm that from the dashboard.
If I have zero issues accessing my server remotely from a user account that is not my Plex Server account, wouldn’t that eliminate the remote access posts above? I don’t have issues accessing media remotely, its the quality I am receiving when streaming remotely. Unless I’m missing something?
You’re missing something.
An indirect connection means your client cannot directly connected to the server. Instead the traffic is going through a relay server of Plex. Those indirect connections are limited to 1 Mbps (2 Mbps for Plex Pass members).
Most of the time, relayed connections are due to some glitch in somebody’s remote access configuration. Sometimes it’s due to a restriction applied by your ISP.
Thank you for the assistance. I did mention this to my co-worker. Randomly, it will say my server does not have remote access when I can still access it remotely. My co-worker and things I’ve read online stated the remote access may show not accessible but it will still work as its a bug. I guess this is not the case. I assume configuring my router with the proper port would resolve this issue and keep my remote access stable?
See the link about “The basics of remote access troubleshooting” above.
Remote access involves many components and you don’t have all of them under your own control. There’s usually a huge dependency on your ISP not locking you in.
