Does anyone know why I get the error, ‘failed to determine decision for content’. I am using a brand new FireStick 4K with an existing Plex Server on a Synology device, which operates fine on my PC and phone and TV’s.
Which version of PMS are you running on your Syno (Settings > [Server Name] > General), and which exact version of the Plex app do you have installed on your FireTV? Is this one of the new models with Amazon‘s Vega OS?
Good Morning tom80H, thank you for your reply. My PMS is Version 1.42.2.10156. I have a Fire TV Stick 4K Select. OS1.1 (1001010050520) Fire TV Home Version 1.72.0.97994.0. Purchased from Amazon on 29/10/2025.
Out of curiosity, if you check Settings → About in the Plex app, what version is reported?
The “Select” version of the FireTV Stick runs Amazon’s new Vega OS. It is not backward compatible with Fire OS, so there’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes to get apps to work. One those is streaming apps themselves (not just the content, but the apps) from Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.
You’re likely running into a limitation Amazon introduced in order to get their new software and hardware out as soon as possible.
@pshanew Client Version: 2025.28.0 (unknown). Platform Version: 1.1. Device Model: AFTCA002
Is there anything you guys can do to prevent this from being rolled out on these devices? As far as I know, no new experience app hasn’t even been released in beta on any Android TV-based device. It’s pretty obviously not ready or it would have been.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the new experience UI. But the new app on a new OS on brand new hardware is a recipe for disappointment.
[Edit]
What possible reason could Plex have for offering this app for the new device, in this state, other than further alpha testing? It’s literally only a beta on Android, and even then on mobile. And then it’s offered as the Plex app on the new Vega OS?
I’m assuming you folks have product managers. Most companies who offer products do. I can’t believe that they benefit in some way from rushing a product to market.
Even someone for whom you sponsor videos says the product isn’t ready (even in the context of Plex [see the 3:50 timeline]):
That app isn’t even in beta on FireTV/Android TV devices yet (It’s in beta on Android mobile). How it’s getting rolled out on these beta-level hardware devices, I don’t know.
If I may jump in?
The AFCTCA002 is a new product line - specifically Vega OS version: 1.1 ;
I was briefed on the new Vega OS devices.
The applications team has already alerted us the existing app has functional issues with this new device
They’ve been working on the Vega OS platform since getting the info from Amazon.
Out of curiousity, have you tried setting quality limits rather than letting it decide ?
“It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see how it works out for 'em.”
I’m generally a proponent for Plex. But there’s only so much willful ignorance I can stomach. If a new platform’s first introduction to the platform is going to be its weakest, woe be to them.
Better to not even allow access on that platform until there’s at least a beta-level app ready than to thrust them straight into the drama. They say that no publicity is bad plublicity. Plex seems to be fully embracing this right now.
I recommend folks read Tom’s link to the announcement.
Very interesting reading.
Hence my concerns. It’s less than beta quality and was still released. Less than 7 Mbps playback? Only H.264 with AAC? All the live TV restrictions? All the playback restrictions? It’s not even alpha quality at this point. Why release it? My God, where are the standards?
This doesn’t even rise to the level of “don’t let perfect to be the enemy of good enough” standard.
It’s just there to say “Hey, look, we have something. Ok?”
Defending Plex has become a bad job at this point. I’ll continue as long as I can find points to defend, but they are few and far between now.
The FireTV 4K Select is very similar to the Smart TVs with Limited Playback Capabilities - limited bitrate, AAC audio, etc.
Suggestion: Return it. Get a FireTV 4K Max Gen 2. It is much more capable. Two friends have one. They’ve never had problems streaming from my server. In the US it is currently on sale for $39.99 USD.
