Pretty scummy behaviour. Also against ToS.
Thanks to knoll126 for finding this.
Yeah, this is very bad form. Not a good look at all.
And here I was wondering if I was being too paranoid when I called out someone on the Reddit for pretending to be unaffiliated with Plex when they obviously were.
They called me crazy.
It’s great optics. I give them money. They pay people to gaslight me. Evidence like this makes me feel so much stronger in my convictions when I think I see this stuff happening.
“Gaslight. Gatekeep. Call his new app mainstream!”
Just because he works at Plex doesn’t necessarily make his review fake.
Its possible everything he writes there is true. Could he be biased, possibly. That doesn’t make it a fake review.
Completely against Play Store TOS though. And a really bad look for Plex.
You think he’s paying for Plex Pass, or is it a perk that comes with his employment? Because if it’s the latter then his comment on having Plex Pass is less about authentic experiences and merely a platform for marketing.
I mean his entire message is less of a review and just basic marketing copy.
“I have [paid for feature] so I can [list benefits.]” That “list benefits” is very important to recognizing marketing materials over reviews. There’s a difference between posting your experiences, and trying to push people to buy your product. When you’re selling benefits you’re consciously phrasing your words in such a way that you’re trying to get the would-be consumer to evaluate your product over the money they have.
This isn’t a review as much as it is, “If you pay us money for the Plex Pass you’ll be able to have access to your media on your phone and tablet when traveling in areas with low cellular connection.”
Not to mention they didn’t disclose themselves as Plex staff. Instead Rui tried to blend in as a totally average consumer without an agenda to fill. This is no different than attempting to trick people into reading an advertisement to close more sales.
Looking beyond this kind of crap on the surface, it paints a really ugly picture about Plex as a company. They were caught this time. And now we know with evidence that their staff is actively taking steps to deceive would-be consumers. If we take it one step further, this could be an act of desperation if they’re trying to drum up more customers this way. And I don’t know which is worse.
Regardless, there’s no way this is a good thing.
Don’t forget. Just two weeks ago the co-founder himself was using good reviews as the reason to dismiss complaints about removing music from the Plex main app.
So on one hand you have Plex employees making fake reviews. And on the other you have the Plex co-founder using reviews as the basis for removing features. One hand washes the other.
Hey, leave me out of this.
I highly encourage everyone to report this to Google so it can be removed. Plex, Inc. might can ignore us here, but they can’t stop us from fighting their nonsense on other platforms.
Leave me out of this too.
You literally posted reviews and did exactly what the poster claimed. Why are you demanding people to not mention something you publicly posted?
Wish we could leave you out of everything Plex related.

I pay for Plex for the ability to DOWNLOAD to my tablets for offline viewing. After this new update I can no longer download onto ANY of my android tablets.
Since @elan seems to take reviews so seriously, I’d highly encourage everyone to leave their thoughts here, where they’re nice and public and all their investors can see.
Already did on April 2nd and it was sad because I thought, like many others, thought it was a cruel April Fool’s joke. Then it really sank in after a few days. By the end of that first week, I died inside.
Why? Don’t you have ownership over any of this? That’s a sad response for lack of integrity
Wow, I have really loved Plex and been an advocate for about a decade. I still love using Plex and all of its features. I have intentionally not updated my iOS devices to avoid the new app.
I must say though, these are really bad optics.
I would never leave a review for any of the products my employer makes, it is totally inappropriate, especially when it is not clearly indicated that it is posted by an employee.
