False duplicates reported

Plex keeps reporting duplicates for TV shows that have been upgraded. I have a 720p copy. A new 1080p replaces it, the old one is automatically removed but there is a “2” next to almost all new TV files.

If I click “edit” I see the 720p is “Unavailable” because it has been removed. This isn’t always the case, but typically shows the “Unavailable.” Sometimes it just shows 2 links without “Unavailable” next to one and I have to find which one is the real, active one and delete the false link. It’s very frustrating having to do this everyday.

I do have “empty trash after scan” enabled. I’ve tried library scans, optimize, clean bundles, etc. Nothing works. Is this a known bug? Anyway to clear this false duplicates without manually going through each file every day? Also, not always, but sometimes files won’t play until I delete the “Unavailable” file…

“Empty Trash” should get rid of those. If not, something is preventing it. Check the folders that your library points to. Do you have a folder that is blank or doesn’t exist listed in there? If so remove it and then try emptying the trash again.

Empty trash sometimes removes it, but not always, and not typically without a reboot of the server as well as an empty trash. I also made sure “Authorized devices” was correct and no duplicate old server entries.

However, on my other server it’s worse. It doesn’t have issues with file upgrades, it just see’s duplicate entries for almost 2,300 items. However, they have the same file name and if I delete either one, it deletes the only file that is actually there… (there are no duplicates in the folders it just shows it like in the picture below)

I meant these folders.

Those are correct in my setup. Two local, one cloud. But all “duplicates” are saying from the local HDD

This is for the server with the “unavailable” message? The duplicate is a different issue. Let’s do 1 at a time.

When you say “cloud” are you using something that maps a cloud drive to your computer, then PMS is looking at that mapped location? If so, if the cloud drive isn’t working right, it will act as if it’s not there, and the empty trash will not work. Try accessing the mapped location outside of Plex to make sure it is responding, then try emptying the trash.

Updated
The “Unavailable” duplicate file issue for the most part is fixed. It doesn’t remove them right away, but it’s only about a day of lag and doesn’t seem to cause any issues anymore when pressing “Play” on a file that shows “2’ so I can deal with a day or so wait, so we can ignore that issue. Other issue is still persistent and has been for quite awhile.

Duplicate file issue: Fairly new server launch that shows 2200 duplicate files from a physical hard drive. Tried “empty trash” as well as “Optimize” and “Refresh Metadata.” If I remove the show, scan the folder, re-add the show, scan the folder then the issue is fixed but that would take forever at 2200 files. It’s not whole shows either it’s typically 5-15 random episodes of tons of different shows.

Always shows 2 files with same name and path and if I delete one they both go away and the file is removed since there isn’t actually a duplicate. I ensured there were no weird duplicate servers or anything in Authorized devices, have rebooted countless times too (This duplicate thing has been an issue for well over a month), and there are no bad folder paths in the directory setup. Not sure how I can clear this annoyance out!

Bump…

You didn’t answer my question from before about what cloud drive you are using.

My very next paragraph responded to that. I said we can ignore that issue as it seems to fix itself every 24 hours and the real question was on the other issue…

I must be blind, I don’t see the answer. Your duplicate issue may be caused because of that too so I need to know what cloud system and how you are using it.
