Fast forwarding is unbearably slow

Sometimes I have problems with the Plex Media Server disconnecting while I’m watching something on the Xbox Player. When I reconnect and want to continue watching whatever I was watching, Plex doesn’t recognize where I stopped watching.

So I have to fast forward to the spot where the connection broke off, and that’s when the real trouble starts… it takes AGES. If I jump ahead, Plex loads and loads and loads and loads, and then I have to jump ahead again… depending on where I stopped, it can take up to 10 minutes to get back to where I was.

It would really help if the fast forwarding worked more like it does on Netflix, where I can just zip through the entire episode/movie and go to where I want to. Any chance a feature like that is coming soon?

I think this can vary greatly depending if your media has to be re-encoded or not and to what degree. For example if you have a Plex optimized file (.mp4 web optimized) and the biterate does not exceed your connection (LAN not internet), Then I think the xbox one should be able to utilize direct play, and the playback should be much smoother.

I’m not sure … I just tried the following work-around.
Set the playback on the client-side to a low bitrate. The transcoding on your server will probably use all the processor, but the video jumps to the desired location very quickly. Once there, switch the bitrate back to ‘original’. It still takes time until the movie starts but from a pure gut-feeling, it does not seem to take the same amount of time.
