It seems that while the Android app supports streaming transcoding of video content, this is not yet available for audio content (except when syncing as opposed to streaming). For files with lossy compression the maximum bitrate is typically 320kbps which is not a problem for my connection, but my FLAC files can easily reach 1Mbps which is too much for me to stream in realtime. I would imagine this is mostly just a UI tweak; the backend support must already be there to request a transcoded version during sync.
Actually, it looks like transcoding during sync might not be working either; at least, it's not working for me: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/69422-flac-music-files-are-not-transcoded-for-syncing/?p=474638

I agree. This should not just be a feature for video but also audio.
I thought it would transcode my FLAC files to something lighter but I almost broke my monthly transfer limit
I wish I could specify a transcoding quality for audio files just like video.
