[Feature Request] Ability to edit year of movies/home videos

In theory, Plex is supposed to read the year of a movie or home video from its filename. In practice, Plex only does this if it feels like it; if it’s in a bad mood, it’ll just use the current year or something equally idiotic. Here is what “Spider (2007).mp4” looks like in one of my movies libraries:

Because there is no way to edit the year of a movie or home video from Plex Web, I am stuck with the year on that film set to 2015. Plex seems to be completely ignoring the year in the filename when I use “Personal Media” as the Agent for the library.

You might be thinking, “just use a different agent and it’ll fix the year”. But I can’t. When I enable Freebase or The Movie Database on this library, Plex changes this movie to “Spider-Man 3”, even though “Spider” exists in Freebase. Normally, I’d just fix the metadata and manually change it back to Spider, but since I also can’t edit the cast list for some stupid reason, that’s not an option – I’d end up with Tobey Maguire and whoever else stuck on the cast of my movie.

I just edited my original post so that this discussion covers a broader range of issues with years in not just home videos, but movies as well.

The number of missing options in the metadata editor is pretty astounding, and the fact that I’m finding forum posts from Plex staff members promising that this was a to-do item two years ago is more than a little bit frustrating. Plex’s primary purpose is for organizing one’s media library, but I’m finding it pretty much impossible to organize my media correctly with all the half-baked UIs.

I think plex is maybe using the file creation date here. There are a lot of things not working fine for home video and photos like automatic collection, years, geodata collection and more like Apple does it.
