Modifying files in "Other Videos" library always changes displayed year

I have a fairly extensive collection of music videos that only seem to “tag well” in an “Other Videos” Plex library. I have tagged everything manually in the library and it works very well for the most part.

Just like my house, “I never quite get finished” with the library. I am constantly modifying the files (e.g. deinterlacing/recoding, updating header info with mkvtoolnix, etc). Any modification to the file (without changing file name) ALWAYS changes the year displayed for it in Plex. I can get the year corrected by by modifying the date within the Plex metadata editor…but I have to do this everytime…why? If I have added, and locked, the date for a video then why doesn’t Plex just leave it alone?

I seem to recall there are at least 1000 other posts about this strange, but persistent condition - so it appears this is yet another bug Plex can’t quite get a handle on.

or

It’s by design - and judging by the latest AFTV Plex App, that doesn’t surprise me AT ALL.

I have discovered that changing the Segment Information>Date tag with the mkvtoolnix header editor will update the year to match in Plex (once library files are scanned/refreshed). Appears that the date entered there by default is the mkv file creation date, and this is where Plex is pulling the year from after scanning and refreshing an updated mkv file.

One way to get around the issue I suppose…albeit tedious to do for every file affected by this.
