Currently, the Plex team has to add support for digital tuners and antenna’s, meaning that many tuners are not supported at this point. Also, the Plex team is legally not allowed to support any type of decryption of channels, even if the user has paid for those services.
By creating a mechanism for plugins/add-ons that provide the interface for a (particular set of) digital tuners, the responsibility of the above will be placed at the community, allowing for more freedom in what digital tuners can be used. This way, we could have Plex supported tuners/antennas, and community supported tuners/antennas.
