[Feature Request] Artist Album Sorting by Release Date

Is there a way to sort library / albums / album artist by release date? Instead of alphabetical by album name.

Currently I see the released date sort under album. But that sorts everything in the library by release date. It would be nice to see albums under artist sorted by release date so you can scroll down the library and see an artist album starting from 1995 then the next album in 1997 for example.

Ah, interesting request; I can see sorting by artist and then release ascending or descending as being useful. We were basically just mirroring what the web app does.

Anyone else have an opinion here?

I always thought it was a little inconsistent that I have the option to choose the album sorting order in the music library preferences, but it’s only respected on the artist page. It would make sense that the sorting order when viewing albums by artist is identical throughout. I assumed it was a low priority bug that would eventually get fixed.

It has been mentioned before:

Ah, that makes some sense, but unfortunately that’s too expensive to do, while paging all the data.

So that’s a no. Not gonna h :slightly_frowning_face:appen

We could match the library setting, but no, we can’t provide per-artist sort settings in a global list of albums. I mean, we could but it would be expensive and complicated and doesn’t seem worth it

Maybe I haven’t had enough coffee yet this morning, but I don’t understand the reply by @elan

When I set the preference for album sorting in the advanced section for the music library to one of the chronological methods, all albums for every artist are sorted by that method when you go to any artist page. If there is a way to sort albums on a per artist basis, I haven’t seen it.

What I expected, was that when I viewed the Library by All - Albums - Artist, I would see the artists listed alphabetically, and the albums by each artist listed by release date. After all, that was the sorting order I had selected in the preferences.

So first you say ā€œI can see sorting by artist and then release ascending or descending as being usefulā€ and ā€œWe could match the library settingā€ and then say ā€œno, we can’t provide per-artist sort settings in a global list of albumsā€

I don’t think I suggested a preference for each artist, which would be complicated to display in a global list. But I can’t see how sorting by All - Albums - Artist - Release Date (my setting in the preferences) is more complicated than All - Artist - Albums - Artist - Album Title (the default view)

Edit the artist, go to the ā€˜Advanced’ tab. ā€œAlbum Sortingā€

Yes. I have that setting to ā€œOldest Firstā€ And it works perfectly when I go to the artist page. There isn’t a setting for each individual artist (that I have seen), and I personally would never want or see the need to sort one artist’s albums one way and another artist a different way…

I would expect when I have that setting for the library to ā€œOldest Firstā€ it would display them that way when I go to the All Albums Artist view in the library it would respect that setting.

Obviously, I’m not explaining myself clearly, but I can’t come up with a different way of saying it.

ā€œArtistā€, not ā€œlibraryā€

Ahhh… I see it now. Never have changed anything there on any artist, but I never looked for it. Thanks.

So that is on the default setting on all of my artists, I assume. All albums are sorted by Oldest First. Is sorting by Oldest First the default that Plex has determined should be default, or does it respect the setting that I have chosen for the Library (which is Oldest First) ?

In any event, I still think that if I have set the preference to Oldest First for the library, I should see that reflected in the All Albums Artist view, regardless of how I have set album sorting for a particular artist. But apparently it can’t be done, so my opinion is mute. :upside_down_face:

I have the default library setting of Album Sorting set to Oldest First. When I click on a particular artist it does show up in release date order which is very nice. I was just curious if it was possible to do under the ā€œAll Musicā€ tab for the whole library.

Since its a ridiculous amount of work and cost its probably not worth it. Thank you for looking into it, though.

I did notice that I can sort individual artists albums differently than the library default which is pretty cool. But that’s a bit to far into the weeds for me to go at this point. Maybe if I had alot of live shows from jam bands that I follow and wanted the newest live stuff first. Maybe?

This option is interesting for artists you might have, which work like the ā€œartistā€ titled ā€œVarious Artistsā€. There, you might prefer an e.g. alphabetical ordering.

It’s possible by changing the URL parameters in Plex Web. Doesn’t help with Plexamp though.

@elan I would love an option to sort albums chronologically by artist in the ā€œAlbums/By Album Artistā€ view. I just switched from iTunes and that is the way Apple shows their album views. I always liked being able to see all my albums and play music that way, and I even sort my physical collection that way, but I hate how Plex can only set albums chronologically in the artist view.

I can go to the All Albums view, and sort by Release Date (chronologically for all albums) All albums re-sort instantly, to the new order. If Plex can sort all of the albums by all of the artists chronologically, it doesn’t seem like to much of a stretch to page the data by artist (alphabetically) and albums by release date. Both fields, the artist and album are retrieved when you sort by release date…

In the next release sorting by Album Artist sorts each album chronologically inside each artist.

Will that apply only to PlexAmp? If so, can we expect that type of sorting to migrate to all other apps? (as least as an option)

Unfortunately, it only uses the year and not the date to sort within artist, so even if I have it set to ā€œoldest,ā€ it sorts each album alphabetically within each year. Any solution for that?

The new Plexamp version sorts by release date, not year.
