For those that don’t like the new Android mobile app, here is a place to vote. Not saying that this will definitely get the old UX back, but this way we can better judge how many users feel this way.
I do think this is important. Sadly, all of my votes are allocated to equally or more important issues.
We should have more votes. Five is too few for a project the size of Plex.
Since your telemetry will presumably be telling you (apart from afew who block it) who is using the android app, why not use something like survey monkey or similar to email those users all with a yes/no poll about whether they preferred the old or the new UX. I would respond to such a poll if (and only if) you committed to disclosing the results (response numbers and yes/no votes).
Doing it this way seems a bit like providing a safety valve to let those who are really annoyed vent and blow off steam, keeping it all buried in a minority-interest forum where they can be safely ignored while creating the illusion that they are being listened to.
Doing a poll is fine is we had unlimited resources, but we don’t. Using the vote system allows us to prioritize the importance of these requests. We don’t have the resources to implement everything. i.e. What would you rather have, the ability to pick a server, or sync a file as-is without transcoding, or gapless music, or the ability to resize the video, or direct play of any codec. If we just had a poll of “Do you want these features?”, they could come back with a yes to everything, then what?
Sure, people want everything. That’s why you have to tailor your survey to either force respondents to choose the one or two most important things to them, or you ask for a ranking of a predefined set of features from most to least important. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even include an option for “other” and let respondents enter whatever they want on that one option, who knows, you may find something useful there.
You can then gather the results and crunch the numbers. It is surveying 101.
My own personal vote (and I’ve already voted yes above) is for bringing the old UI back. At the very least the ability to switch servers and to see my media in the manner I already organized it (libraries) during the course of many years I’ve had Plex.
If it turns back, I ll make a request to have it go forward to the current one once again.
Some folks have suggested to have the ability to select your user experience. Of course the response was ‘this is not actionable’.
I’d rather have my android mobile plex app work!
Let’s start with the basics.

I had to vote for this simply because I can’t figure out what else to do…
I DON’T like the new UI at all but there are a set of simple changes that would make it tolerable, most notably a selection box that just let me say include “All Servers” or “Just these servers”. That combined with things working correctly would make me happy enough not to gripe and complain constantly. These requests are scattered all over the forums so repeating them is silly and I don’t see any information forthcoming that makes me think the things people are crying out for are coming. With that in mind I have no choice but to just say “Give me back the old way”.
The other thing that would make things WAY better is the ability to just put library’s on the home screen instead of the dumb hubs. The hubs are virtually useless for me because Plex Home is incomplete. The On Deck, Continue Watching, etc are always wrong because everyone in my house has to be logged in as me because you can’t do MANY things as a Plex home member (set a recording). I REALLY think this new UI would have gone over better if the other features were complete first.
The simple example is someone sharing their server with me adds a porn library and now it shows up on the home screen of my 12 year old’s Android Phone.
Long story short - I don’t really want the old UX back, but I want the new one to work and actually address the real problems making such a shift brought to the surface.
MovieFan.Plex,
I’ve been pretty harsh with my comments on the new UI and many of my replies have been in response to your posts. I have to say at least a thank you for creating this poll to at least start an official dialogue about the UI issues with the new format and putting out a possibility to bring back the old UI.
For those voting, if you can also provide comments in What specifically don't you like about the new Android Mobile UI, that would be helpful.
- The media categories and their bar at the bottom of the screen. Categories are not how I organized my media. It is organized in the libraries I created. I shouldn’t need to pick the category before I’m able to get to the server and library selection. Which leads to the next point…
- Many more clicks before I can get to what I want. For example: to play all my music collection in random order now I have to click on Music, then make sure the correct library is selected, then All Music… now I can click the random play button. Before it used to be from the hamburger menu select the library I want and press the random play button (since the UI went straight to browse instead of forcing me to go through discover first).
Look, if you guys hate the idea of bringing back the hamburger menu because it’s so last year , have a look at the Plex add on for Kodi. It has a scroll-able bar across the top with the libraries in the server.
In my mind the whole idea behind the categories goes against the phrase “Your Media Your Way”. I do not have and I do not want my media in Music, Movies, TV Shows, and More… I have it and I want it in “Kids Movies”, “Kids TV Shows”, “DVR TV Shows”, “My TV Shows”, “Family Videos”, “Family Photos”, “Kids Videos”, “Kids Photos”, “School Photos”, etc… that is my media my way.
That has summed up my complaint for all of these “new” UIs being rolled out. People don’t create their Libraries this way and it just ads an unwanted layer to navigate that is confusing to many users.
Exactly. The Roku beta, PMP, both have the same problem. I liked it better before, when all my libraries were listed at the top level. I even mocked up what I thought would be a better solution.
What?! There’s going to be an update to the Roku app that makes it look like PMP?!
Damn.
Yes, I’ve been monitoring the forum thread on the roku beta. It is coming.
I’ve been using Emby and Plex for Kodi since they launched the new UI on Android. Before I had not even considered trying them out, but now I use them on a daily basis alongside the Plex Roku client.
I’ve been putting off commiting to either alternative and completing the transition away from Plex. Partly financially because I didn’t want to pay for Emby premier just yet, and partly because the Roku client had not changed.
So, I decided the line in the sand will be the launch of the new Plex for Roku client. Once it goes live I’ll be giving money to their competitors (Emby in this case) and transitioning away from Plex.
I think they ;
a) option enable/disable consolidate servers
b) option enable/disable consolidate categories
c) why is there even a limit to voting !?!?
I noticed this too. I wonder how many people want to vote but can’t due to using up their allotment of 5 votes.
Unfortunately I cannot cast all 5 of my votes for this feature. Changing the UX made this app worthless. I have reverted all my players to previous versions and have not updated Plex for the last 10 updates or so. If you can show me how to cast all 5 of my votes to revert please do.
