[Feature-Request] Built in local authentication server (prevent plex.tv outage)

Five to six years ago, we had a monster ice storm and my Internet went down for a few days. I was told that because of the ice, a car had rammed into and destroyed a transformer upstream somewhere. It took 2-3 days to take care of the issue.

However, during that time, I was still able to enjoy my Plex content on my local server. [Even though research for this topic indicates that Internet Requirement has been in place since 2013]

Fast forward a few years and the local cable company is installing fiber optic accessibility in my neighborhood (I’ve had my fiber optic from another company for a decade prior to this). Even though the lines were clearly marked, those baboons still managed to cut my own line and my Internet was down again for 2-3 days until my company was able to fix it.

Unfortunately, I learned a hard lesson about being able to watch MY CONTENT on MY SERVER on MY LOCAL LAN with the Internet down.

This needs to change. I understand that the Internet is needed to grab the bells and whistle material, but there is absolutely ZERO reason why it’s needed to watch content on my server on my own LAN.

ZERO!

On top of that, what happens should the day come when Plex as a company falls by the wayside? I don’t wish that by any means, but I don’t want to be stranded like DIVX users when Circuit City pulled the plug on that dead brainchild of a company (the irony is that Circuit Cit is also dead and gone), and I sure want to continue to watch my own content on my own servers if/when I have an Internet outage.

Also, I know that there are articles on how to configure your system to allow for this, but this is also something that need not be necessary. Every time you get a new modem, you have to go through the same routine (I periodically get new modems from my provider for better performance)

Agreed. This is a no-brainer. When our internet connection goes down, Plex should be fully and easily accessible within the local network, by all clients (app, web, etc.).

10 years later and no recent signs of movement :frowning:

another breach of data on plex inc’s servers. This feature should really be implemented. At least for lifetime users

Or just allow clients to ā€œcacheā€ the result for xamount of time and they can just go direct. Shouldn’t be hard to implement that, but my guess is the analytics has some value, or at least ā€œthey hit us we can hit them with content we can make money withā€

Boy this feature request has aged well.

At least give us admins the option to manage our own auth. Walking friends/family through the rigmarole of creating a Plex.tv account is such a pointless pain. And now I get to explain to them that they should reset their password as if I’m the one who can’t maintain their security.

What’s the status of this? It’s obviously an issue with many
