Hi there- I’m a SageTV refuge, and I’ve recently picked up Plex for serving & accessing my video content- and I’m really impressed! The UI is very well done, the server/client architecture works quite well, and I’m able to stream my video content from my server to a Roku 2XS and an Android tablet I have. The tagging works very very well, to boot!
Audio’s not quite as good; I have a pretty serious sound system, so I’m currently using JRiver Media Center, with all FLAC format files, and utilizing Airfoil for Windows + an Apple Airport Express to stream the music digitally to the sound system. JRiver has an android app (gizmo) which provides remote control, so I’m able to browse my music on my tablet and control what’s playing from anywhere. This is pretty much an ideal setup; because the music is streamed digitally, the DAC on my AV receiver does the D/A conversion work, and I get the best possible sound for my audio. Now the Plex android app would probably be sufficient for managing what’s playing, but there doesn’t appear to be a way for that to operate as a remote control- for video it’s supposed to be able to tell plex to play a movie on my Roku (doesn’t work yet, I haven’t investigated why, need to turn on logs and look at them). And additionally, there’s no support for an audio-only airplay destination. If this were to happen, Plex could quite possibly become my single media server, entirely replacing JRiver. Anyone willing to comment on whether something like this might be in the cards?
Second, I’m interested in peeking at development. I have poked around, but don’t see any public source repositories for the plex code, or any pointers on required compilers/toolchains for getting started. Did I miss this someplace? I see the DuffedPlex code, but I couldn’t figure out where he got the code he branched from. I know that the code isn’t as open as XBMC, and I’m not interested in a philisophical war, just hoping that some code is out there that I could poke around and hack at, as there’s always things I’d like to tweak to make things work “just right”.
Cheers
Ikarius
