i have some power hungry 3.5" drives in a large RAID5 set holding most of the content I do not watch very often, mostly blue ray backups and previous seasons of series. I also have a small 4x2.5" RAID5 drive set that I use for live content.
Setting the update interval to 24h works like a charm but still, why spin up the large 3.5" drives if content has not been modified. Will it be possible to introduce a sort of per folder tick mark in a library section that allows me to select if I want to include it in the auto-update or not ?
Or.... is it already there but hidden under the hood somewhere :-)
Doesn't look good but want to double check my findings.
Seems like activating the update automatically feature only makes things worse. Disks spin up every hour or more. Reverting to the daily update interval did not give the expected results either. In fact, it did not make any difference.
Not knowing how things work under the hood I would almost think Plex calls an OSX routine to monitor changes and the routine cannot be deactivated without restarting Plex with the daily update interval setting.
I restarted Plex a couple of hours ago and the disks have not spinned up even a single time since the start (once during the start but that's it). Plex is the only app that uses that volume. Spotlight has been deactivated for the volume and all filesharing capabilities have been temporarily disabled (SMB/AFP/NFS).
My crappy story about an OSX routine is triggered by the fact that even with debug logging, no Plex activity is shown when the disks spin up.
I will wait or a couple of more days to verify and re-verify my findings.
Automatic update is not the answer for my problem. Best solution is disabling updates to the library. Now, the drives only spin up at 3am for 10 mins (why?) and that's it.
Is there any way to "tag" a library as online, near line or offline. That way, the online content is still updated automatically, the near line content has to be updated manually (to prevent disk from waking) and the offline content can be unplugged until marked otherwise.
Do we have any other users on the forum that vote for a feature enhancement like this :-)?
