Feature Request: Display of Movie Sets / Collection in Movie listing...

Hi,
I’m looking for a feature to list my Movie Sets (Trilogies etc, like Aliens/Harry Potter/…) as one entry (with poster and name, like any other movie) in the Movie list . Just like a TV Shows.
As I enter the Movie Set I wish to see a Fanart-backdrop and some details of the Movie Set, and all the Movies in “trilogy”-order, with their original title and poster. Just like Seasons under a TV Show.
(Order should not default to release date, if I wish to display StarWars in “trilogy”-order or release date order should be up to me).
As I select one of the Movies i wish to see the Movie page with detailed info, fanart etc… Like any other Movie. Pherhaps with the addition that it belong to a Movie Set.

This can either be triggered by the Collection-Tag or by a new Set-Tag.
I would prefer if this could be recognised by the scanner from naming Convention.
-Like creating a folder called “Aliens -MovieSet”, and in the folder I store all my Aliens movie folders.
-To set the order there can be a prefix like “Set1-Alien” , “Set2-Aliens”, “Set3-Alien3”, “Set4-Alien Resurrection”

This was something I had, and now miss, on my very old PopcornHour with YAMJ many year ago…

As many streaming programs that have this, such as xbmc/kodi, it should be embaressing to plex not to have it… And honestly, because of this feature alone, if I knew of a different program/app to use on roku other than plex, I would.

There is actually a huge thread on this https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/81160/movie-collections#latest
Three years old and still not available.
Are you looking for something like this…

Meanwhile the Plex way is apparently a filter called “collections”…You just have to manually edit the sort title of everything in a collection and then discover that the collection filter is unavailable in many clients.
:))

I’ve been using XBMC/Kodi since, well since it only ran on an xBox. I am still running it despite preferring Plex in almost every other way except in the manner it handles Movie Sets (Or collections)

My daughter has down syndrome and would sit in front of Kodi all day if I would let her but she gets frustrated with plex, why, because with kodi all of her harry potter movies are together, all of her sesame street movies are together, I have 15 movie sets created just for her, all of her movies are in those sets, and each set has a period at the start of its sorting title… So when you open movies the first 15 options you see are hers and she chooses one and then chooses a movie from it…

You try to do that in plex and you are editing every single movie and she still has to scroll through pages of movies before she finds what she wants she gets frustrated and upset… And the thing is if I want to watch a series of movies that don’t all start with the same name i get frustrated as well. I shouldn’t have to edit the sort title and put James Bond in front of each one. The data for movie sets is in the agent for themoviedb and its in the plex database. And please don’t mention the collection filter, that’s almost worse than no solution at all.

Almost everything about plex is cleaner and easier (once you learn the differences) than XBMC/Kodi. I would love to only support one media center on my home network and on my clients networks but until movie sets/collections are supported (cleanly) that’s not going to happen…

Two final thoughts

  1. Fix moviesets and I promise I will never mention XBMC/Kodi here again.
  2. There are two features I want before I shell out for a plex pass. Better support for movie sets and better support for audiobooks. Either one and I’ll probably subscribe, both and you wouldn’t be able to take my money fast enough.

Given the current situation here’s what I do:

Is it ideal? Probably not.
Is it better than battling through ‘Collections’? You Dam Skippy.
Does it work? Absolutely.
I’ve gotten used to it and all my Boxed sets and sequels are easily found and watched.
Bitchen about an issue Plex clearly isn’t going to do anything about is time better spent watching my boxed sets, sequels and collections.

So here’s the thing @JuiceWSA , this issue for me sets the tone for the relationship between me, the end user, and Plex, the company. Because Plex has not been responsive on this issue, I don’t trust them. It is a huge part of the user experience and it seems to me that their intractability on this is indicative of how they treat their users on other matters, including user metadata.

Your workaround doesn’t do what the community of developers have done for users in Kodi. Even though it works for you, it doesn’t allow the end user to view their entire movie library while only showing one entry for each set.

Perhaps if Plex was a community project and not a for profit company they would be responsive. It’s not, so I have kept some reservations about them. And I have been using xbmc on my xbox since 2007 and using plex since around 2011. Plex is very good at what it is doing, so i would not be surprised nor unprepared for them to be bought by Netflix and summarily buried.

Whatever, Dood.

Plex doesn’t care what you, the user thinks. They’re also not going to do anything about Sets and Collections. Anyone who doesn’t see that writing on the wall by this time… well there’s something wrong with them.

I do it the way I do it because it works and I don’t have to spend a lot of time whining about it - leaving more time to whine about other, more important things Plex does that I hate. Oooooo Yes, there are Plenty, but Sets and Collections isn’t one of them.

If you don’t like it enough to leave Plex forever, in favor of whatever it is that does it better - you go right ahead. Plex doesn’t care about that either.
